Think about it. You're playing Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs – or even worse,Outlast – with an Oculus Rift strapped to your face and headphones growling in your ears, roaming haunted halls in full, immersive 3D. You're peering around corners, waiting for the next monster to leap out of the shadows and attack. You clear a room, take a breath, and turn around – to see a vicious beast staring directly into your eyes. You'll rip those VR goggles off your face as quickly as possible, guaranteed.
This video from YouTube user is proof-of-concept for the above scenario, played out with Dreadhalls. It also offers a compelling argument for developers to include an "auto-pause" feature triggered by a sudden, jarring camera flip in Oculus Rift horror games. And maybe all of those "falling really quickly" games. And probably in games with sharks.
Jump to the 3 minute mark for those who like their scares fast.

Glass still isn't quite ready for the consumer, but Google's wearable platform just keeps getting better and more powerful thanks to frequent software updates. Today's version bump brings YouTube to your search results and also grants access to those with Google Apps accounts. It also brings the Shazam-like Sound Search from Android to your head-mounted display. Most interesting though, is Vignettes, which allows you to lay your current Glass display over a photo to produce an image like the one you see above. Think of it like a screenshot tool for your real, very nerdy life. One can only imagine that eventually Vignettes will get a video mode, but for now its still photos only. If you're one of the lucky Explorers you can download the update now. The rest of you will have to live vicariously through the photos at the source.

Indie dev wants to offer a different WW2 game experience
Indie developer Luc Bernard has strong words of criticism for modern day shooters, calling them distasteful and in the case of Wolfenstein: The New Order, even an insult to the Holocaust.
"You've seen it, right? I think they have robot Nazis or something like that? That's what I would call distasteful," he told GamesBeat.
"I'd nearly say it spits on what happened during World War II. You're taking what the Nazis represent - a mass genocide, the killing of so many people - and you're making it seem like a toy, a game. It's an insult to the Holocaust."
Bernard is currently trying to raise funding for his own game, Imagination Is The Only Escape, which he calls an "educational story-driven game about the Holocaust through the eyes of a child." He's turned to crowd-funding after publishers failed to grasp his concept.
"This doesn't really fit with publishers," he explained.
"I don't have anything against them, but a game like this doesn't fit in their market model. Even when I was trying to find people to pitch it to, they proposed instead that I try and get the license to Maus, the comic book. I said, 'No, that's a great story, but this is my own thing. I don't want to use someone else's license.' This just isn't an easy game to do through traditional methods."
In the past Bernard has worked on Mecho Wars, Reaper, SteamPirates and as a design consultant on Pocket God: The Runs.
The game's funding campaign currently has $3,441 of its $125,000 goal raised, with 39 days to go.

Sales in August up 21% driven by Madden, Saints Row IV
The US console and handheld games market is expected to have recorded year-on-year double-digit growth in August - the first time in almost two and a half years.
That's according to Cowen & Company, which is expecting August NPD data to reveal console and handheld software to be up 21 per cent compared to August 2012, with total packaged goods sales, including PC games, up 18 per cent.
The positive comparison is partly being driven by EA's latest Madden release, which the publisher confirmed last week had sold over 1 million units.
But Cowen & Co. estimates that a number of other high-profile releases also sold well, including Saints Row IV (522,000 units), Disney Infinity (225,000 units), Splinter Cell: Blacklist (209,000 units) and Pikmin 3 (185,000 units).
Looking ahead, more positive comparisons are expected with the launch of Grand Theft Auto V and Battlefield 4.
It is expected that 2013 will be the first year that packaged goods will finish the year in positive territory since 2008.
NPD will report August sales on Thursday September 12

September 9th, 2013, 23:01 Posted By: wraggster
The Advertising Standards Authority has rejected a complaint raised against retailer GAME.
Three complainants had alleged that GAME’s “We Won't Be Beaten on Trade-ins” offer, which promises to beat any rival trade-in offer by £1, was misleading “because they reported that when they attempted to take advantage of the offer they were refused as the trade-in prices offered by competitors were considered too low for GAME to make a sufficient profit”.
GAME countered the complaints by saying that there were many instances – for which, incidentally, it could provide evidence – where it had honoured the trade-in deal and made no profit or suffered a loss.
The ASA dismissed the complaints, agreeing with GAME “that the refusals to honour the offer that the complainants had encountered were likely to have been isolated events which were not representative of GAME's commitment to, and application of, the offer more widely”.
Added the ASA: “Because GAME had provided evidence which showed a number of cases where Game had honoured the offer even when they made little or no profit, or made a loss, we considered the claim was not misleading and was not in breach of the Code.”

<center style='font: 14px/22px "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;'></center>EA is working on an indeterminate number of new intellectual properties, EA Games executive VP Patrick Söderlund told MVCUK. "We have six to eight completely new IPs in the works," Söderlund said. "The day we stop making new IP is when we go onto life support."
EA's definition of a "new IP," however, may be a bit more liberal than what that term implies at first blush. "We are working on a new Mirror's Edge game, and although that's not a new IP, it is a revival done in a new way," Söderlund said. "We are developing Star Wars: Battlefront, which to us is a new IP, even though it isn't technically."
So by "new," EA doesn't necessarily mean new new, but rather new-ish, or new enough, perhaps. In any case, it does make us wonder what that other handful of fresh IPs are all about. The sky is practically the limit! In fact, there are so many incalculable variables to consider when predicting that sort of thing that we're just going to stop thinking about it. Ah, that's better.

"We didn't add the scene just to be controversial"
[h=3]Dennaton Games[/h]
Dennaton, the creator of Hotline Miami, has removed a controversial sexual assault scene from the sequel's demo and is currently reconsidering its place in the finished game.
"We respect everyone's opinion. We felt like we might have to have the whole game for that scene to work, or maybe we were doing it wrong. It didn't come out the way we wanted it to," developer Dennis Wedin told RPS.
The scene in question was first brought to media attention by writer Cara Ellison, who objected to the handling of a sexual assault scene within the Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number playable demo.
"The control is taken from me by the game, and my character, the Pig Butcher, pins her down and drops his trousers," said Ellison.
Wedin added that the intention of the scene wasn't just to be controversial, and that there is much more to the two characters involved than is shown in the demo.
"We're gonna see how people react to it when we test the whole game. We'll get opinions and stuff like that. We'll see how we can present this in a good way. In a way that we want it to come across. Not just as provocative. That's not our meaning at all.
"I respect people's comments and the fact that people voiced them. That's how they feel. Our scene made them feel this way, so we have to think about why and if there's something we can do to make it better. I don't think it's right to just say, 'You're wrong. You're just looking at it wrong.' That's not the way to go."

September 7th, 2013, 22:27 Posted By: wraggster
Digital full game downloads and DLC spending grew 27 per cent in the US games market during Q2 2013.
That didn’t stop the sector experiencing a three per cent overall decline in the video games content sector, with the total falling to $2.88bn. When hardware is added the decline increased to nine per cent.
$769m was spent on new games throughout the period, with a further $343m spent on pre-owned and rental. Digital generated sales of $1.77bn.
"The decrease in new physical spending is partly due to the decline in the number of new SKU's released at retail, (with 37 per cent fewer new SKUs in Q2'13 compared to Q2'12) which is to be expected as developers, publishers and consumers alike prepare for the next hardware generation," NPD analyst Liam Callahan stated.
"Increases in digital format spending offset nearly all the losses from the declines in physical format spending, with digital full game downloads and downloadable content spending experiencing a combined 27 per cent increase (when compared to Q2'12).
“Spending increases occurred across both video games and PC games in the digital format."

33,000 gamers will attend this year’s Gadget Show Live at Christmas, says organiser Upper Street Events.
And the firm says that 86 per cent of attendees will use the show to decide between PS4 and Xbox One.
The event takes place between November 1st and November 3rd, and Upper Street research says that 73 per cent of visitors are currently planning to buy a PS4 – higher than the 69 per cent considering an Xbox One.
Event manager Katie Tozer said: “Our visitors turn up at the show with shopping in mind and they are not shy about putting their hands in their pockets.”

Another NSA story? The Wall Street Journal reports, 'The U.S. has intercepted an order from Iran to militants in Iraq to attack the U.S. Embassy and other American interests in Baghdad in the event of a strike on Syria ... U.S. officials said they are on alert for Iran's fleet of small, fast boats in the Persian Gulf ... U.S. officials also fear Hezbollah could attack the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. While the U.S. has moved military resources in the region for a possible strike, it has other assets in the area that would be ready to respond to any reprisals by Syria, Iran or its allies. ... Israel has so far been the focus of concerns about retaliation from Iran and its Lebanese militant ally Hezbollah. The commander-in-chief of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps said last week that an attack on Syria would lead to the "destruction of Israel." ... The Iranian message, intercepted in recent days, came from Qasem Soleimani, the head of Revolutionary Guards' Qods Force, and went to Iranian-supported Shiite militia groups in Iraq, according to U.S. officials.' What's interesting is this Washington Post story from 2011: Iran's Quds Force was blamed for attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq.

LG has unveiled what it says is the “world’s largest” ultra HD OLED TV at IFA.
The 77-inch ultra HD curved OLED TV follows the company’s 55-inch curved OLED TV, which was shown off at CES earlier this year.
The curved display was likened by LG to IMAX cinema screens, claiming it “fills the viewer’s field of vision more completely than a flat-screen TV.”
The TV uses a combination of LG’s WRGB OLED and Ultra HD technology, resulting in “infinite contrast ratio” and four times the resolution of a Full HD screen.
"It’s a true home entertainment wonder that has to be seen to be believed," said Havis Kwon, LG’s president and CEO.
"This 77-inch TV is proof that we will never stop pushing the boundaries and exploring new possibilities."
For the moment, the screen remains a concept, but the existing 55-inch non-ultra HD OLED TV, which was originally only a concept too, is available for $15,000 (£9630).
