While the AAA approach has served the Splinter Cell series well in the past, the developer heading up the its next installment has reservations about AAA in the future. Speaking at the Gamercamp festival in Toronto today, Splinter Cell: Blacklist director Patrick Redding said the industry is moving away from the high budget blockbuster model.
"The market as a whole is going to undergo a critical shift in priorities, a shift away from the absolute primacy of graphics and production values and content creation toward systemic depth," Redding said, adding, "This trend is going to trigger a reality check for developers like me who work on established franchises with a large succession of sequels, and it's also going to be a call-to-arms for smaller game creators, including a number of people who are sitting in this room, I hope."
Redding said the shift would be driven primarily by procedurally literate players, digital distribution channels, and the rising cost of production. As for where those factors would point the industry, Redding suggested a new class of game he called "lower-case aaa." Among the key qualities he believes aaa games should emphasize are a reliance in systemic design, open-ended games that allow for a range of possibilities and strategies instead of one "right" approach. He gave chess and poker as examples of such design.
However, one of the big problems with systemic design is that it's just difficult, Redding said. While a publisher can throw more resources at a game and reliably produce better production values, the same safe return on investment isn't there with design. Throwing more designers at a problem won't necessarily produce better systemic depth, and it might even hurt the final product.
Additionally, aaa game creators will need to give up authorial control, as Redding said the meaning of the game will only emerge once the players begin experiencing it, exploring the mechanics and using them to tell their own stories or achieve their own goals. Finally, Redding said he expects asynchronous multiplayer to be a key component of the aaa experience.
Redding pointed to Minecraft as the best recent example of what he considers a aaa game. As for Blacklist, Redding didn't describe it as aaa, although it does reflect some of the qualities in its systemic AI and the particular way it handles lighting to see if a player is effectively safe from detection. However, he said that Blacklist does show that it's possible to have a game with AAA production values put in the service of better, more complex game mechanics.

Ah, the cocktail arcade cabinet. With the right design, its able to blend right in to any living room decor, much more than any traditional stand-up cabinet, at least. [graham] over on Instructables didn’t tear apart a 30-year-old arcade cabinet for his new coffee table. Instead, he built one from scratch, connected it to a Rasberry Pi, and brought hundreds of arcade classics right in front of his couch.
The build began by cutting up some wood to house the 24″ LCD screen, Raspi, and arcade controls. The LCD screen is supported with a rather clever system of cross braces screwed into the VESA mount, and of course a piece of perspex protects the screen from the inevitable spills and scratches.
The joystick two blue ‘player’ buttons and the player 1 and player two buttons are wired directly to the GPIO pins of the Raspberry Pi. The Raspi boots up into a selection of MAME games, but there’s also an option for opening up the window manager and browsing the web.
It’s a very neat build that’s a lot smaller (and easier to build) than a traditional cocktail cabinet. As [graham] is using it for a coffee table, it might get more use than a regular MAME build, to boot.

Barnes & Noble recently took the wraps of two new tablets, updating its range (along with everyone elseit seems) in preparation for next year. That doesn't mean it's washed its hands with the OG Nook tabletand Nook Color -- in fact, both just got another price cut. Starting tomorrow, you'll be able to pick up the original 8GB tablet for $159, the 16GB version for $179 and the Nook Color for $139. With two price cuts in three months, anyone would think it was trying to get rid of stock. This still puts last year's lower capacity model shoulder to shoulder with Amazon's 2012 Kindle Fire (with ad subsidies), but with Christmas just around the corner, we're not complaining about more choice for less dollars.

Samsung is learning to navigate the US regulatory maze quickly; its Galaxy Premier has already passed through the FCC mere days after it hit the newswires. The approval is very much a mixed blessing, however. While it helps confirm the hinted-at Superior codename and shows that HSPA 3G will work on AT&T and larger Canadian carriers, it's clear from the frequency mix that there's none of the LTE-based 4G that North American providers would demand for an official deal. While we weren't bracing ourselves for the Premier crossing the oceans, it does mean that Americans wanting Samsung's not-quite-a-Galaxy-S-III will have to either score a cheap import or hope one of the US networks has a change of heart.

[Michael Clemens] was looking for gifts for his Grandmother’s 90th Birthday. She is visually impaired and loves to be able to listen to audiobooks. The problem is that she doesn’t really get the hang of using electronics. He made things easy by building her a one-button audiobook player.
The Raspberry Pi board is a perfect solution for this project. It’s cheap, it has an audio port, it has storage for the books on the system SD card, and it runs Linux. The last part is key as it made things very simple when [Michael] started pulling together the various components.
When the RPi is powered up it drops immediately into a Python script which loads the audio track and places the music player daemon in pause. The yellow button seen above works as a play/pause button when clicked. If the listener misses something she can hold the button for more than four seconds to go back one track. Loading new books is easy too. [Michael] copies the files onto a thumb drive with a special volume label. When plugged into the RPi USB port the script automatically copies the book and starts playing when the drive is removed. He included a video demo on his project page linked above.

Google TV is a network connected television. It does what you would think: plays television programs, streams media from the internet, and allows you to open URLs on your TV. But one nice feature is that it can also be controlled over the network rather than just via an IR remote. Google publishes apps which make this simple with a smartphone. But the communications protocols are open source, so [Leon Nicholls] wrote a Google TV remote control library in Java.
The video after the break shows him pairing a Raspberry Pi with his television. The image above is the pairing verification code you must enter on the remote hardware before control is authorized. Apparently this is a step that needs to happen every time if using Google’s Anymote library. [Leon] improved that, by saving the pairing data so that the first authorization is all that it takes.
He figures this could be used for home automation. We’re not sure what we’d use it for but we’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Google’s Android operating system was found on three out of every four phones shipped during the third quarter.
Having topped 100 million units in Q2, Android has reached a new record level for a single quarter, with 181 million smartphones with the OS shipped.
IDC’s report reveals that iOS came in second with only 14.9 per cent of market share. This means Android outsold Apple’s operating system 5-to-1.
"Android has been one of the primary growth engines of the smartphone market since it was launched in 2008," said Ramon Llamas, research manager, mobile phones at IDC.
"In every year since then, Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition. In addition, the combination of smartphone vendors, mobile operators, and end-users who have embraced Android has driven shipment volumes higher. Even today, more vendors are introducing their first Android-powered smartphones to market."
According to IDC, Samsung devices such as the Galaxy S3 and Note 2, were the most popular Android products among users.

It may be the industry buzzword of the moment, but freemium games still have a long way to go before they take down retail.
£216m will be generated in the UK by virtual goods sold in games such as FarmVille (pictured), League of Legends and World of Tanks, research firm SuperData this week told MCV.
Meanwhile retail – in what is the sector’s most challenging year to date – has already generated £812m from software sales, and that number is expected to grow dramatically over the next eight weeks.
SuperData Research also predicts that the free-to-play market in the UK will keep growing over the next three years, and will be worth £266.1m by 2015. A rise of 22.9 per cent.
However, that’s a slower rate of growth than the rest of the world. According to the research firm, the global free-to-play market will be worth £9.3bn by the end of the year, and by 2015 that will rise to £14.23bn, an increase of 53.5 per cent.
The data also revealed that in August the average revenue per customer in the UK was £11.25p for social games and £11.64p for free-to-play MMO games. That MMO figure increased to £12.15p in September, possibly due to new MMO Guild Wars 2.

EA has responded to consumer complaints about FIFA 13 which were broadcast on BBC consumer programme Watchdog.
Two consumers appeared on the programme to share the issues that they had been experiencing with the game, from crashes, invisible players and balls to purchases in Ultimate Team mode disappearing. Watchdog stated that complaints had flooded in from other gamers also facing problems.
In the letter EA defended its sports title, citing the massive sales numbers and comprehensive testing process.
"Since we released a major update to the game on October 19, we've seen reported game crashes and other issues drop by more than half," it said.
"Our commitment is to not only address issues and necessary fixes to improve the FIFA experience as quickly and effectively as possible, but deliver new services and new content all season long. The process of improving the game experience for our fans is a constant one, and our team continues to work on additional improvements that we will implement and communicate in the coming days and weeks ahead."
"We know that we have significantly improved the FIFA experience for our fans in recent days, and we fully expect that to continue as we develop and implement additional improvements and fixes."
It also explained that fixes and improvements had to be rolled out slowly to avoid causing problems with the game's overall performance.
"We are delivering improvements and fixes in such a way to ensure the millions of people playing FIFA 13 do not experience undue or overly lengthy network/server outages, that title updates and other improvements are done to a high quality, and that we're confident the changes will improve the FIFA 13 experience for everyone."
The publisher also invited the BBC to visit its Vancouver studio and see the FIFA team in action.

The ExPlay festival in Bath this morning played host to a panel that explored the role videogames can play in science and society, looking specifically at how gameplay – whether full game mechanics or simply gamification – can help players learn about, and understand, difficult or obscure topics. A spoonful of sugar, as it were.

Bold claims when you consider that Google's pioneering Project Glass isn't even on sale yet.
Google introduced Project Glass back in April, the augmented reality eyewear designed to enable video calls, automatic photo capture, maps and so on, all controlled via voice.
And while the $1,500 device won't hit the consumer market until 2014, Sony and Apple have recently secured patents for their own respective rivals.
Presumably, that's why Juniper predicts the next-generation wearable devices market – like smart glasses – will be worth more than $1.5 billion by 2014, rising from $800m in 2012.
The bulk of revs are set to come from consumers who spend on mobile fitness and healthcare accessories, while the impact of 'head-mounted displays' will increase over time.
Nitin Bhas, report author, Juniper, said: "With consumers embracing new technologies and form factors, wearable devices ranging from fitness accessories to heads-up displays will be more prevalent in the consumer market.
"While fitness and entertainment will have the greatest demand from consumers, within an enterprise environment, the demand for wearable devices will be greatest from the aviation and warehouse sectors."
North America and Western Europe will hold 60 per cent of device sales, while healthcare will amount to more retail value than fitness devices, despite the latter selling more units.

Google’s director of Android user services Matias Duarte has branded SD cards “techy nonsense”.
In an attempt to explain why the company’s Nexus devices do not include SD card support, Duarte posted the following on Google+:
Everybody likes the idea of having an SD card, but in reality it’s just confusing for users.
If you’re saving photos, videos or music, where does it go? Is it on your phone? Or on your card? Should there be a setting? Prompt everytime? What happens to the experience when you swap out the card? It’s just too complicated.
We take a different approach. Your Nexus has a fixed amount of space and your apps just seamlessly use it for you without you ever having to worry about files or volumes or any of that techy nonsense left over from the paleolithic era of computing.
With a Nexus you know exactly how much storage you get upfront and you can decide what’s the right size for you. That’s simple and good for users.
While Matias has a point that some may find using SD cards confusing, it seems unusual to remove the option all together. Anyone that has used a number of mobile phones throughout the years will surely be able to figure it out by now? And those using lower end Nexus devices will find themselves looking towards cloud storage as their 8GBs of space gets eaten up. This then begs the question: Won’t those who find SD cards confusing most probably find the concept of ‘the cloud’ a little hard to understand?

First-person horror adventure Montas has taken to crowdsourcing with its Indigogo campaign. The PC and Mac game casts you as an alcoholic accountant prone to hallucinations in a town plagued by mysterious murders. Interestingly, death will be persistent, so instead of retracing your steps, the story will instead shift in a different direction.
The emphasis is on evading and hiding from enemies rather than combat and there seems to be a focus on exploration, with secret areas and optional side-quests peppering the landscape. Also of note, Montas is one of the first indie games to commit to Oculus Rift support.Developer Organic Humans are looking for $30,000 by 14th December to fund the game. "You will receive your rewards whether we reach our goal or not," the developer stated, noting that it's determined to complete the game whether the crowdsourcing campaign is successful or not.As far as rewards go, $10 secures a copy of Montas upon release, $20 throws in a digital artbook and stickers, and big spenders can shell out a grand for one-of-a-kind sculptures of a skull, hand, or "humans" featured in the game. Finally, those who would like to support the game without spending money can vote for it on Steam Greenlight.

So said Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick during an earnings call today, when questioned on the likelihood of increased costs associated with next-gen development."We don't have a ramp up of operating expenses for next generation," said Zelnick.
Despite the jump in technological prowess expected for Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles, Zelnick suggests that development costs may actually be lower than the present. "Do we believe that titles will be a whole lot more expensive to make for next-gen? The answer is we do not," he said, decisively.
"In many instances," Zelnick added, "We believe that it may be somewhat easier to make titles for next-gen depending on how the technology comes together."
Sony and Microsoft are expected to begin pulling back the veil on their next consoles in 2013, with the release of at least one of the two high-end machines expected by the end of 2014.
EA Labels president Frank Gibeau suggested in September that Xbox 720 and PS4 are due to launch "in about a year's time". More recently, he labelled next gen consoles the company's currently making games for "spectacular".

EA, during an earnings call yesterday, fully acknowledged the disappointing performance of Medal of Honor: Warfighter. While exact sales were not mentioned, the title did not hit targets and reviews of the game were simply not good. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter thinks the bad reception could mark the end of Medal of Honor as a brand and severely hinder EA's ongoing quest to dethrone rival Activision from the top spot in the shooter market.
"The last iteration of Medal of Honor received an average Metacritic score of 75 in 2010 (after its predecessor received an average score of 73 in 2007), and EA management committed to improving quality with this year's release. Instead, with an average score of only 50, the game is likely to fall short of revenue expectations by $100 million or more. Perhaps more importantly, the poor performance of Medal of Honor makes it highly unlikely that EA can deliver significant digital revenues from DLC subscriptions next year, and sets the company up for a disappointing comparison to the $204 million in digital revenues it expects from Battlefield this year," he noted.
Pachter continued, remarking on NBA Live as well, which unlike Medal of Honor, he thinks can rebound: "The cancellation of NBA Live means that EA has had a team (likely several different teams) working on the game for the last three years without any revenue contribution to show for their efforts. We think management did an extremely poor job of explaining these missteps, and understand why many investors remain skeptical. In our view, it is imperative that EA management acknowledge that they understand the underlying causes for the execution missteps, and commit to shareholders that these causes will be addressed, and that there will be a turnaround in game quality. It may be too late for the Medal of Honor brand, as a score as low as this one received may be fatal. We are more optimistic that the NBA brand will remain intact, and are confident that a quality game will come out next year."
While Battlefield has been a top performer, Medal of Honor hasn't held up its end, and that means EA will have a long way to go before it can topple Activision and Call of Duty.
"These missteps should not be taken lightly. A few years ago, EA management set forth a strategy to displace Activision as king of the first-person shooter heap, and said it intended the duo of Medal of Honor and Battlefield to alternate releases and slowly take share from Activision," Pachter said.
"Warfighter's review scores may have destroyed chances for sequels in the all-important first-person shooter segment of the market...We think that low review scores will impair EA's (and the Medal of Honor brand's) reputation with those who pre-ordered the game or bought it as soon as it was released (likely some of EA's most dedicated customers), and believe EA alienated at least a small portion of these gamers."
"Given the impairment to the Medal of Honor brand, we think EA is unlikely to take Activision's mantle as the leading developer of first-person shooters for several years."
