Microsoft has been rightly celebrated for its E3 briefing this year, but it was a demonstration of both its current position of weakness and the unique strength that its great rival Sony cannot realistically match.
In the week leading up to E3, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot predicted that there may be just one more generation of console hardware before streaming becomes the ubiquitous platform for games of all kinds. "There will be one more console generation and then after that, we will be streaming," he said. "All of us."
This thread was also picked up by EA CEO Andrew Wilson, who used the E3 stage to speak directly to the growing influence of streaming and subscriptions on how the company thinks about its future. When Xbox head Phil Spencer revealed that Microsoft was actually developing a streaming platform (possibly as a replacement for the download-based Xbox Game Pass), E3 2018 suddenly became about so much more than which games will be released in the next 12 months.
Ultimately, these far-reaching ideas tainted the view of Sony's more restrained briefing, which contained barely a word about its plans for PlayStation Now. Instead, Sony used its position of strength in the market to focus on a handful of big games - a strategy that left many (both in the room and watching from afar) feeling underwhelmed."It is possible that a few years from now Microsoft will be the Netflix of gaming and Sony more like HBO"
Joost van Dreunen
"With an install base of 75 million that makes sense for now," says Joost van Dreunen, CEO and co-founder of SuperData Research. "But it does not provide an answer to the question what the future holds. Worse, it is inconsistent with the direction senior management recently revealed - plans to focus on subscription revenue from online gaming and streaming music and video."
Where Microsoft surpassed Sony is in doing both: showing a slate of 50 games (most of them not exclusive, it should be noted) and doubling its first-party studio roster, while also improving Xbox Game Pass and indicating that streaming will be the next step.
"In particular, this last part is promising," van Dreunen says. "Although Microsoft has failed to win the centre of the living room as it originally set out to do, it is setting itself up to become the leader in the digital games market by equally amassing content and focusing on distribution rollout. It is possible that a few years from now Microsoft will be the Netflix of gaming and Sony more like HBO.
"But a digital future is about scale and infrastructure, which means that Microsoft may yet claim the centre."

Been a while since we had the charts on here so here it is:
God of War was the best selling physical game in the UK last week.
The UK charts currently lack digital data, so the release of certain downloadable titles during E3 are absent from the charts (although Fortnite on Switch, which was downloaded two million times in 24 hours, would not have counted as it was a free game).
There was, however, a wide-reaching PS4 sale - which has already had a very positive impact upon this week's EMEA chart.
The 'Days of Play' promotion saw discounts for games such as God of War, which rises two places and reclaims the No.1 spot. PlayStation VR Worlds also benefits, rising 48% in sales and reaching No.5.
Other games that were bundled or benefitted from the promotion included Fallout 4, which rises 22% in sales and is at No.3, while Assassin's Creed Origins at No.9 (up 61%) and Call of Duty: WWII at No.10 (up 130%) also enjoyed a strong sales week.
<aside class="jobs" id="jobs-1979513">
</aside>Last week's No.1, Vampyr, drops 70% in sales and falls to No.8.
There were no new games in the Top 40 this week.

In a curious move Microsoft have flexed their cash spending muscle to buy github:
- <article>
After supposed claims that Microsoft was looking into acquiring GitHub, it has now been officially confirmed. In a few months, Microsoft will own GitHub, a major purveyor of open source code. With the prior success of other acquisitions like Minecraft and LinkedIn, GitHub staff claims they feel confident with Microsoft's leadership.
According to the announcement blog post by the site, innovations will be made with Microsoft's help, though the focus on providing open software will always remain. A new CEO, Nat Friedman, has been appointed as well, while the previous CEO and co-founder of GitHub will be now working directly at Microsoft.
Of course, this announcement and the rumors leading up to it has caused controversy. Microsoft hasn't always handled its acquisitions well, with many pointing to Skype as evidence of this. GitLab, a competitor to GitHub, has also seen massive registration numbers in the past two days.
The total transaction cost Microsoft 7.5 billion dollars.

Some good news for hackers:
modrobert writes: "I have released SecureChatAnywhere which is a lightweight program written in Java with the purpose of making it easy to encrypt and decrypt any kind of text messages using AES-128/CBC symmetric encryption. The graphical user interface (GUI) is designed as a convenient 'copy & paste tool' for computers to manage encryption and decryption stand-alone, in other words without relying on any kind of external communication.
https://github.com/modrobert/SecureChatAnywhere
The encrypted data (ciphertext) output is in Base64 format which makes SecureChatAnywhere compatible with any kind of text based internet communication tools out there such as email, chat clients and online services. "

This news will put a rather large spanner in the works of the console manufacterers:
The biggest fear of those that love to open up their 'consoles' to mod or change parts inside, may soon be over as the big 3 have warned to stop using those nasty 'Warranty Is Void If Removed Stickers' which are in-fact illegal, so don't worry, be happy, rip them off!
<aside style="font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 20.52px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Earlier this week, the FTC released a public reminder about a 1957 law that governs what companies can and can’t include in their manufacturer warranties The posting lists three examples of what it calls questionable provisions.
However, as Ars points out, the example text of “This warranty shall not apply if this product ... is used with products not sold or licensed by [company name]” lines up with the language used in Nintendo’s warranty and “This warranty does not apply if this product ... has had the warranty seal on the [product] altered, defaced, or removed” matches wording found in Sony’s warranty.
A third example, seemingly taken from auto manufacturer Hyundai’s warranty, attempts to bar people from using non-manufacturer parts in repairs, lest they void the warranty. In all three cases, manufacturers aren’t legally allowed to make such restrictions in the United States.
Specifically, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act states that statements like those are generally prohibited unless companies provide parts and services for free or have received a waiver from the FTC.
“Provisions that tie warranty coverage to the use of particular products or services harm both consumers who pay more for them as well as the small businesses who offer competing products and services,” said Thomas B. Pahl, acting director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a statement.
The six companies that were sent warning letters have 30 days to revise any promotional or warranty information to remove language that implicitly states or implies “warranty coverage is conditioned on the use of specific parts of services.” Following that, the FTC plans to check back in with each company and will potentially seek out legal action if violations still exist.
</aside>
So good news for gamers that love to mod in the USA, now we just need similar changes in EU and other smaller markets!

Heres some news that all of you coders who like hacking will find exciting:
Recently, you may have noticed the news about ESP8266 for Switch, and ESP8266 for PS4, as such these normally cheap devices have become 'hard-to-find' and are not perfect but scene developer @_AlAzif plans to change all that with this new announcement below:
<aside style="font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 20.52px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">This project has been a little neglected since the 0.4.1 release almost a month ago as I've been working on another project since that release. I've haven't been hiding and posted a bit on Discord so this won't come as a surprise to some. It's a "modchip" for webkit exploits, mirroring the existing ESP8266 methods, just with more features/polish. The device can either create a network to connect to (No internet access), connect to an existing network (Works just like this host), or create a bridge (Enabling internet access though the device). It's a custom PCB that's about 25mm*18mm*4mm (Currently) so it should fit inside most consoles. The front end looks like my regular exploit host and you can view a demo (out of date) of the control panel here.
Features
- Control the device from your phone/computer over Bluetooth/Wifi
- Open API for developers to interact/control the device
- Press physical buttons on the console
- View/Download UART data
- Add, download, or delete exploits with one button click
- Custom filetype (Compresses exploits into a single file to install/share)
- Supports both Bin and JS payloads
- Includes application to compress/extract these files
- This is to save space and add to ease of use
- Web based firmware updates for this device (Need no physical access to device to update it)
- Basic usage without soldering (No buttons or UART)
- A secret feature that'll be revealed after it's working 100%
- If you do some snooping on the PCB you might be able to guess it
Hardware Info
- USB-C port (Custom pinout for internal installation, but can just run off USB power)
- SD card for exploit storage (GBs vs 3MB)
- User Expandable
- Custom Case for external use (Extender to turn a female USB-C to a male USB-A)
Testing process
- Software testing with ESP(8266/32) dev boards.
- Finish prototype PCB boards.
- Send out prototype boards. Will be a small batch, about 10 boards.
- "Finish" software, get feedback, make revisions to PCB as necessary.
- First batch of v1.0 boards. (Current bill of materials puts PCB cost @ $10 depending on interest, larger order sizes will make the board cheaper)
Beta Tester Info
It's currently in a working state, just using the API, with majority of the features are done (Currently the bluetooth controller & the admin panel HTML+JS are not 100%) and I'll be looking for testers (Bring your own board) within the next two week or so. Contact me on Twitter or Discord if your interested in testing.
To be a part of the first testing process you just need familiarity with the exploit process and familiarity with your ESP board (Be able to use the serial logger and flash the firmware).
To get one of the prototype boards soldering ability is a must. There are ~6 wires to solder, 2 of which being on the PS4 motherboard. I'll eat the cost for the prototypes.
If there is demand for prototypes, I may make a bigger order and will send them out at cost or make a bigger PCB order and send out PCBs with the bill of materials.
When all is said and done I plan to open source all the code/PCB info so others can help further development/produce boards for others. I want to have it at a 1.0 state before releasing before having others make incompatible software/PCBs.
</aside>
At the same time, he also released a new update to his PS4 Exploit Host package, which you can grab from his GITHub page below:

The outofprint archive team are back with a new magazine release:
This week we have something rather special.
Last month I was contacted by Frazer Rhodes and Garry Casey with the question if I would be interested in working on a Neo Geo fanzine called New Earth by Graham Pike that started in 1994 and ran up to 1998.
Jump a little bit forward and here we are. The first 15 issues, which make up Volume 1 of this fanzine are available on the site to read, or to download, whichever you prefer.
I have included all 3 versions of each issue into the same package for download since the size of each one is rather small. This way you'll get both the Max-Rez, Tablet and Phone version in a single download.
Enjoy!

Always good to have positive news from the world of gaming after years of negativity, heres the news:
Over the past few years, the console market in Japan — both hardware and software sales — has been sluggish in Japan. In 2017, however, that changed.
According to Famitsu, hardware sales experienced a huge spike in 2017 compared to the previous year. In 2016, Japanese hardware sales were 117.05 billion yen (£776m), while in 2017, they jumped to 202.37 billion yen (£1.34bn).
Software sales also increased: in 2016, they were 182.4 billion yen (£1.20bn) and the following year, they were 189.3 billion yen (£1.25bn).
A big part of this increase is due to the Nintendo Switch’s brisk hardware sales. The PS4 has also continued to churn out steady numbers.
The last time the Japanese gaming market saw an uptick was in 2006, when the Nintendo DS Lite, the Nintendo Wii, the PS3 launched.

I wish to bid on behalf of DCemu; everyone, users and visitors alike, a happy new year. 2017 has gone, but it brought us the likes of the Nintendo Switch, exploits being found for it, the PS3 version 4.81 / 4.82 exploits making downgrades possible, etc. It's been a hell of a ride - roll on 2018!

One of the biggest emulators of recent years is Retroarch , the emulator itself covers many systems but is it a jack of all trades but a master of none ? heres the latest news:
RetroArch is a ‘manager’ for various emulators (called cores). This means that with one program, you can play all your retro games (such as NES/SNES/MD/PSX/(even) Wii and more) so you don’t have to worry about having lots of emulators and files in different places. RetroArch is more useful on consoles (both portable and handheld) in which you can’t manipulate and open folders that easily, so for some people, RetroArch is a god send as it’s a relatively simple way to manage and run all your retro games
The roadmap has the following highlights:
- Support for the original XBOX and XBOX 360 will be coming back soon. This is because the folks over at RetroArch have reverse engineered the Makefile targets for Visual Studio which makes maintaining these platforms a breeze.RetroArch on Windows 98. RetroArch on your fridge/toaster may come up next!
- The team over at RetroArch have also acquired some devices such as the NES/SNES Classic, Steam Link and GCW Zero. This means that we’ll eventually see a port on these consoles. On the S/NES Classic (probably a port that a good amount of you want), the approach to implementing the cores will be different as RetroArch may be an extension of the S/NES Classic’s regular UI rather than a whole UI altogether. This will make RetroArch look much better since it’ll integrate directly into the UI itself. A good deal of work needs to be done before we see a S/NES Classic port so don’t pester the hardworking people at RetroArch for a release.
- Windows 95 support (yes, 95 for people that love utilising their old computer to he maximum) will also be officialy implemented soon thanks to Brad Parker (as he seems to like extending backwards compatibility to older versions of Windows).
- A Direct3D 8 fallback will be implemented so RetroArch will run on every card newer than the Geforce 3(included – excluding the Geforce 4 MX) and ATI cards released in the same era.
- OpenGL 1.x support will eventually come to RetroArch so lots of older cards will be supported but don’t hold your breath as they don’t know when it’ll start working.
sounds awesome, as an emulation fan i cant wait to see what comes next

Been a while since I posted and in the downtime I finally deleted a heck of a lot of posts from the forums and removed any content that google deem offensive, so now we after a 2 year break are back in google search, not only that but I also got us redeemed by google adsense. So a clean bill with which to restart a fresh beginning.
DCEmu UK will always be a Homebrew and Emulation and Gaming Network but also a side project of mine will be a Theme Park News Site, always loved Theme Parks and cant wait to post news and the best in vlogs.
Hopefully ill get a few visitors back but this is really for me to get reinterested in Homebrew etc and my own view of the world.
Thanks for Listening, I hope I don't disapoint

via Polygon
NeoGAF, the pre-eminent forum for video gaming discussion for more than a decade, has been offline for much of the past 24 hours.
The trouble began in the late afternoon Saturday when allegations of sexual assault were leveled against the site’s owner, Tyler Malka, who goes by the handle “Evilore.” In the following post, user James Scott references this Facebook post, uploaded to Imgur four days ago.
A post to the forum earlier on Saturday also called out “really horrible behavior towards women while publicly decrying the same thing.”
Late into Saturday evening, nearly all of NeoGAF’s new posts all reflected the ongoing controversy. Some condemned Malka, some asked what had happened, others made light of the situation, still others flooded the forum with memes or nonsense posts. NeoGAF has been offline since about midnight ET Sunday.
NeoGAF began in 2006 as a relaunch of the old Gaming-Age Forums. Since then, it has been well known as a primary source for the discussion of video games. Developers and industry figures have visited it to discuss or explain upcoming or recently launched projects or hardware. Some members under anonymous handles have gone on to become industry insiders, breaking news on the the forum itself or shedding more light on topics affecting games development.
After the post yesterday afternoon numerous commentators offered “suicide posts,” which were deliberately written in hopes of being banned. NeoGAF is a public forum but it has strict moderation and registration requirements, which has invited criticism of heavy-handedness or censorship in the past. Many of these moderators are said to have quit.
According to USGamer, NeoGAF is preparing a statement about the controversy but so far has issued none, and the site still is down. Polygon has tried reaching out to Malka through social media, but his use of it appears to have been very limited since 2016.

Ive been sat at home this Xmas, getting drunk as you do, eating way too much and watching a load of crap films on TV, but whilst going through Facebook one day I noticed what must have been a sponsored link to a site called Pixelarcades, having never seen it before and im trying to get back into the good old days of newsposting I had a good looksy.
Now I am really glad I did, the guys at Pixelarcades are from what I can see replacing the guts of the games consoles with I presume a raspberry pi board and some type of flash drive or hard drive and bundling it with roms and emulators.
Theres probably more to it than I know but if you want a PSX, Snes, N64, Dreamcast etc maxed out with games this is an awesome way to go about it, if you live in the UK you can even get your console converted and at the moment they are even buying consoles to be retro fitted.
They also sell pinball tables and arcade systems if you have the cash to buy them, some look like one off versions too. Cant fault them at all for the balls to do this, check them out here -> http://pixelarcades.co.uk/ and give me your comments.
