Today, Activision Blizzard has announced that its Call of Duty Endowment has reached his goal of supporting and funding the placement of 50,000 US and UK veterans into jobs a year ahead of its end-of-2019 deadline.
The Endowment's initial goal was to partner with existing veteran employment assistance organizations and fund these placements to reach 25,000 employed by the end of 2018. When that goal was met two years ahead of schedule, a new goal of 50,000 by the end of 2019 was set.
With that goal met as well, a new milestone has been set by the Endowment: 100,000 veterans placed by 2024.

Epic Games is suing two YouTubers for endorsing and allegedly selling cheat for Fortnite in their videos.
A legal complaint filed with the North Carolina Federal Court by Epic has accused Brandon Lucas, also known as "Golden Modz", of "copyright infringement, breach of contract, and tortious interference" due to "injecting unauthorized cheat software ('cheats' or 'hacks') into the copyright protected code of [Fortnite]."
Lucas, who has more than 1.7 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, is the main defendant named in the case, but Epic has named Colton Conter, also known as "Excentric", as a second defendant.

EA Sports' FIFA 19 continued to hold sway in the latest GSD EMEAA charts for the week ending October 7th. While the week saw the game's cover star Cristiano Rinaldo the subject of a re-opened rape investigation, any impact the bad press might have had on sales was not enough to prevent the game topping the charts for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Australia during its second week on shelves.
As for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the franchise's best launch of the generation was not enough to secure it the top spot, and Ubisoft's latest had to settle for second. Super Mario Party was the week's only other new release in the top 10, finishing in third place. Notable new releases that failed to crack the top of the charts included Sega's PS4-exclusive Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, Capcom's Mega Man 11, and 2K's WWE 2K19.
A handful of titles also returned to the top 10, as Star Wars Battlefront II jumped 78 spots on the chart to land in 8th place for the week, while the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy jumped 10 spots up to 9th place.

October 15th, 2018, 16:37 Posted By: wraggster
First weekend UK boxed sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII are down almost 50% compared with last year's Call of Duty: WWII.
The sales are also down 59% compared with its direct predecessor, 2015's Black Ops III.
It's the weakest start for a boxed Call of Duty game since 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
These figures only include physical units, so do not factor in sales of digital downloads - which have been increasing significantly in recent years. Indeed, Activision has since revealed that Black Ops IIII is its biggest digital day one launch ever, and that on day one 'the total number of people who connected online to play Black Ops 4 increased from last year's release'.
Even without digital, Black Ops IIII was still the second biggest boxed launch of the year (behind FIFA 19) and sold well enough to top the charts.
It's also the earliest launch for a Call of Duty for over two console generations - the game usually arrives in early or mid-November. Therefore there is still several weeks for the game to improve its performance.
58% of sales were on PS4, with 41% coming on Xbox One. The remainder was for the PC SKU.
Regardless, coupled with a 25% decline in boxed launch sales of FIFA 19, Q4 hasn't got off to a strong start for games retail.
There are still several big launches to come, with Battlefield V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Fallout 76.
There was another new release this week in the form of WWE 2K18. The game debuts at No.3, but didn't fare much better than Call of Duty. Physical sales are down 37.5% year-on-year. 66% of sales came from the PS4 version, with the rest coming on Xbox One.
Last week's big games are forced to make way for the new releases. Assassin's Creed Odyssey drops 54% week-on-week and falls to No.3, whereas Forza Horizon 4 drops from No.3 to No.5 with a 67% sales drop week-on-week.

One of the famous Houser brothers has offered insight into the making of Red Dead Redemption 2, and the work behind the title sounds intense.
The game has been in development for the best part of seven years, with Dan Houser talking to Rockstar San Diego about how a sequel to Red Dead Redemption might look as far back as early 2011, as revealed in an interview with Vulture.
A broad outline was completed the following summer, with rough scripts for the game's story and missions ready by autumn 2012. But it seems the workload has ramped up significantly this year as Red Dead Redemption 2 finally approaches release.
Dan Houser said that the team has been "working 100-hour weeks" several times in 2018, later adding that compared to previous Rockstar projects, "This was the hardest."
His brother Sam told the site earlier this year: "We've poured everything we have into [Red Dead Redemption 2]. We have really pushed ourselves as hard as we can."
The result is a game that Dan claims is 65 hours long (although five hours of content have actually been cut) and boast 300,000 animations, 500,000 lines of dialogue recorded by 700 voice actors, and even more lines of code.
The level of detail seen in the trailers, and the glowing previews, suggest this work has paid off but it brings to mind the Rockstar Spouse incident around the original Red Dead Redemption.
Back in 2010, just a few months before the game launched, an open letter allegedly written on behalf of the wives of Rockstar San Diego employees claimed the team was expected to work 60-hour weeks - 12-hour days, including Saturdays - or they would face disciplinary action.
Rockstar later attributed this to "people taking the opinions of a few anonymous posters on message boards as fact."
"We're saddened if any former members of any studio did not find their time here enjoyable or creatively fulfilling and wish them well with finding an environment more suitable to their temperaments and needs, but the vast majority of our company are focused solely on delivering cutting edge interactive entertainment," the studio said at the time.
"We've always cared passionately about the people working here, and have always tried to maintain a supportive creative environment. There is simply no way Rockstar could continue to produce such large scale, high quality games without this.
"That being said, making great games is very challenging, which is why we have and will continue to try to keep hold of some of the best talent in the industry and support them in every way we can."

FIFA 19 is already the biggest UK video game of 2018, but its opening week physical sales have fallen sharply.
The game's week one sales are down 25% compared with FIFA 18's arrival one year ago.
Of course, these GfK figures only factor in physical games sold and does not include downloads. The numbers suggest that this year's FIFA either had a comparatively disappointing first week, or there has been a sharp acceleration in the movement from physical to digital. Or, perhaps more likely, a combination of both.
The PS4 version of FIFA 19 accounted for 64% of sales, with Xbox One accounting for 35% and the Switch version the remaining 1%. Sales of the games on legacy platforms (Xbox 360, PS3) were negligible.
The arrival of FIFA means that Spider-Man drops to No.2 for the week. Sony's game is now the second best-selling game of the year as it has overtaken Far Cry 5 in just four weeks. It's an impressive achievement for the PS4 title, as it is only available on one platform (admittedly, the UK's most popular console).
Also dropping a place due to FIFA is Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which falls from No.2 to No.3. Despite a disappointing first week, the game has had solid sales since, and suggests that the Square Enix title will still find a decent audience.

September 20th, 2018, 21:40 Posted By: wraggster
Spider-Man is a hit. With more than 3.3 million copies sold in its first three days of sale, Insomniac Games' PlayStation 4 exclusive open-world action game is now the fastest-selling first-party PS4 game to date, Sony announced on Twitter today.
The previous holder of that title was God of War, which launched in April and racked up 3.1 million copies sold through downloaded copies and physical versions sold through to customers.
The game's sales success is not terribly surprising. Spider-Man launched September 7 to a wave of critical adulation, and UK retail numbers quickly pegged it as the fastest selling game of 2018 so far, and the fastest-selling Marvel-branded game in history. It also topped the GSD charts for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia. In its second week, it held off challenges from new releases Shadow of the Tomb Raider and NBA 2K19 to retain the top spot on the UK retail charts.

September 20th, 2018, 21:39 Posted By: wraggster
The BBC's history with the video games industry is long, and not especially successful.
It began making its own games in 1983, primarily for BBC Micro (the first Doctor Who game was printed on the front of an early edition of Computer & Video Games magazine). It scrapped that in favour of licensing out its IP from 1986, and then come 1995 decided to get back into games properly with the launch of BBC Multimedia - creating software based around the likes of Robot Wars and Teletubbies.
A decline in sales saw that department shut in 2006 and a return to licensing, before the BBC decided to recommit to games once again and set up a dedicated office in Los Angeles in 2010.
That office was responsible for a number of projects including Supermassive Games' ill-fated Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, a number of Wonderbook products for PS3, plus a series of mobile apps and online titles. But success was mixed, and by the end of 2013 the BBC moved games back to the UK and focused once again on licensing.

The finale in the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy arrived this week to an underwhelming reception in the UK.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider's Week One sales are 25% higher than its predecessor's, 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider. However, Rise was an exclusive to Xbox platforms (at the time), whereas Shadow is a full multi-platform release.
Compared to the first Tomb Raider reboot in 2013, first weeks sales are more than 70% down. Of course, these charts don't factor in digital sales, and digital is understood to be taking a larger percentage of the boxed market compared with five years ago. Nevertheless, it's not a huge week one for Lara Croft. 63% of launch sales came on PS4, whereas Xbox One accounted for the remaining 37%.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider debuts at No.2, which means Spider-Man retains its No.1 spot for a second week. Impressively, the Sony game's week two sales are down just 42% compared to its launch week, and it's already on the brink of eclipsing the sales of the last big PS4 exclusive: God of War (boxed sales only).
There's also a new game at No.3 in the form of NBA 2K19. The 2K title charts a place lower than last year's entry, although sales are pretty much identical. 65% of sales of NBA were on PS4, 33% on Xbox One and 2% on Nintendo Switch.
The big riser this week was The Elder Scrolls Online, which breaks into the Top Ten after a significant price cut.

Less than a quarter of parents set and actually enforce limits for the amount of time their children spend online, a report from UKIE's Digital School House has revealed.
'Online Safety: A Pupil's Perspective' surveyed over 2,000 students in primary and secondary schools across the UK; the report found that while children have good understanding of online safety, parents frequently don't, and do little to set boundaries for the amount of time their children spend online.
As video games continue to attract criticism from the mainstream media over issues like 'gaming disorder' or Fortnite-mania, one statistic in particular showed a disregard from parents over setting screen time for children.
Only 19 per cent of students surveyed said that their parents set, and actually enforce restrictions around the amount of time they spend online.
Adding to that, nearly 30 per cent said that limits are set, but not enforced, while 35 per cent reported that no limits are set whatsoever.
"Regardless of actual parental practice what's important here is the student's perception," the report reads. "If they don't perceive their to be limits placed upon their time spent, then they are unlikely to follow this in practice."

Prophet's Brand Relevance Index for 2018 has just been published, revealing that PlayStation has jumped six places from its spot at #9 last year to be the third most-relevant brand in the UK. It was beaten only by Apple at #1 and Lego at #2.
Brand and marketing consultancy Prophet surveyed 11,500 consumers in the UK about 240 brands across 27 categories to come up with its relevancy rankings. PlayStation's third-place spot puts it as the only gaming-focused company in the top 10, though other companies with video game-related initiatives scored highly, including Apple in the top spot and other companies such as Google (#4), Amazon (#8), and Android (#10).

The latest GSD charts for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australia, and it's good news for a hospital simulator and a nine year-old first person shooter.
For the week ending September 2nd, Two Point Hospital was the most downloaded game across 43 different countries (full list below). It held off competition from, impressively, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The nine year-old game returns to the download charts after being made backwards compatible on Xbox One.
The biggest selling boxed retail game of the week was Pro Evolution Soccer 2019, which knocked F1 2018 down to No.2.
In terms of the combined digital and physical chart, the sheer number of platforms that PES 2019 is on means that the game was the No.1 title, keeping Two Point Hospital off the top spot (which was only available as a PC download).
There were other new games in the charts, most notably Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate on Switch, which came in at No.3 in the physical retail charts. Also in the physical retail charts was Naruto To Boruto: Shinobi Striker at No.7. As Nintendo doesn't allow the sharing of digital data, Monster Hunter Generations doesn't appear in the digital charts but Naruto To Boruto: Shinobi Striker does, and as a result the Bandai Namco game charts a place higher (No.5) in the combined chart.
Also new in the combined chart is Yakuza Kiwami 2 at No.18, Firewall Zero Hour at No.36 and Divinity: Original Sin II Definitive Edition at No..40.
Next week will see the Spider-Man sales numbers impact the chart, so expect a different No.1 once again.

A New Mexico lawsuit filed earlier this week accuses children's app developer Tiny Lab and multiple advertising companies working with it, including Google and Twitter, of inappropriately collecting and handling children's personal data in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
The lawsuit accuses Tiny Lab Productions of ignoring the Act in the way the advertising in games such as Fun Kid Racing, Candy Land Racing, Baby Toilet Race: Cleanup Fun, and GummyBear and Friends Speed Racing (among others) is handled. According to the complaint, these apps are clearly marketed toward children and even appear in family and children sections on Google Play, yet are collecting data such as location and demographic information and sharing that data to third-parties to build profiles of child users for tailored advertisements.

September 11th, 2018, 20:39 Posted By: wraggster
It’s been an incredible summer for the team here at Niantic with a flurry of activity all around the globe. More than 400,000 Trainers joined our three global Pokémon GO events in Dortmund, Germany, Chicago, USA, and Yokosuka, Japan and millions more joined together to play with them in a series of global quests to unlock rewards for all players. There is nothing quite like strolling through a beautiful park catching Pokémon with thousands of other players on a gorgeous summer day.
Even more inspiring for us at Niantic was the site of people from all walks of life, all ages, families and friends coming together to enjoy these mega adventures together. And as many of you Trainers know, the fun of playing together wasn’t restricted to these mega events. Pokémon GO Community Days have become regular monthly celebrations organized locally by Trainers around the world.
Over the summer, tens of millions of Trainers around the world played Pokémon GO together every month, with a 35% increase in active usage since May. Since we introduced the new Social features at the end of June, more than 113 million Friend connections have been made and 2.2 billion Gifts have been sent to friends, showcasing how Trainers truly enjoy interacting with one another and playing together.
While the headlines are filled with examples of technology being used to divide us, our experiences this summer deepen our conviction that technology can be harnessed to enhance our lives in a positive way and bring us all closer together and strengthen our connection with the communities where we live and play.
To take that idea even further, we’ve been working with the Knight Foundation on a host of programs to tie AR games to civic engagement. We recently announced a new Fellowship program that will provide select community leaders the tools to integrate Pokémon GO into Open Street events in cities across the U.S. If you’re near Charlotte, North Carolina on September 30 or Macon, Georgia on October 7 make sure to check out these unique events that will take Trainers on a tour across these historic cities.
Meanwhile, back at Niantic HQ, we are eagerly planning even better events for next year!
Getting ready for an exciting Fall
Even as summer fades in the Northern Hemisphere, we are working on some surprises for Pokémon GO this Fall to give Trainers even more ways to play together.
In addition, we are celebrating the six year anniversary of Ingress with the upcoming launch of Ingress Prime. We are incorporating improvements developed in the Niantic Real World Platform into this reboot of the game that started our journey in transforming the real world into a playground for our imaginations. We’ll be revealing more about Ingress Prime as we get closer to launch so make sure to follow Ingress on Twitter for the latest news about the game, the upcoming Ingress animation series on Netflix, and our lineup of Ingress events.
Finally, since we know you want to ask! The teams at Niantic and WB Games are hard at work on the next evolution of Niantic Real World games, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Make sure to follow this site for more info.
It’s been an exciting year so far and we can’t wait to have more adventures together with you.

PS4 exclusive Spider-Man is the fastest-selling game of 2018 so far.
It narrowly beat previous record-holder Far Cry 5 (which was available on more platforms), and sold almost double that of the previous biggest exclusive of the year - God of War on PS4.
Not only that, but it's the fastest-selling Marvel-branded game in history, beating previous title LEGO Marvel Super Heroes by a big margin.
It's also the fastest selling individual format game since the PS4 version of Call of Duty: WWII in November last year. Spider-Man is the latest in a long-line of hit PS4 exclusive single-player games.
It doesn't quite topple Batman: Arkham Knight as the fastest-selling superhero game this generation (in the UK). However, that game was released on more platforms and it also came out in 2015, when digital sales may not have been as strong as they are today (these UK charts do not include digital sales, and only count physical boxed units).

Amazon's market cap has exceeded $1 trillion, making the Seattle-based tech company only the second company to reach that milestone.
The first company to reach $1 trillion in market value was Apple at the start of August. Amazon, which has a much more diverse business interests, has emulated that feat just one month later.
For Apple, games played an important role in increasing market value. Apple hardware is not specifically designed for the needs of developers, but mobile games are the most lucrative product category on the App Store, which earns huge profits for Apple each quarter.

F1 2018 was the biggest game across EMEA regions for digital and physical sales.
The Codemasters racing title was comfortably the No.1 physical retail game for the week August 26th, and was the No.2 digital game for the same period. The title missed out on the digital top spot due to continued strong sales of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege on PC, which was boosted by PR and marketing activity, including a free trial weekend.
The other big new release of the week was Shenmue I and II, which made No.8 in the digital charts, No.2 in the physical retail charts and No.3 in the combined charts.
F1 2018's most successful SKU was the PS4 edition, as was the case with Shenmue I and II. PS4 is the dominant platform in most EMEA regions.

EA Sports has announced that its latest FIFA entry, FIFA 18, has sold over 24 million copies globally since its release in September of last year.
In additiona, FIFA Mobile has been installed 193 million times. Overall, the FIFA franchise has sold over 260 million units to date, maintaining its place as the best-selling sports video game of all time.
Asia-exclusives FIFA Online 3 and 4 have seen over 115 million registered players to date.
"For millions of players around the world the FIFA franchise has become more than just a game - it's as big a part of their football DNA as the teams they love," said FIFA executive producer Aaron McHardy. "Football is a sport that can unite the world through play, and whether it be through console, mobile, competitive gaming or regional experiences like FIFA Online 4 in Asia, we are excited to find more and more ways to connect players to the world's game."

F1 2018 retains the No.1 spot in the UK physical charts, holding off PES 2019.
Konami's football title misses out on the top spot by 250 unit sales (physical data only). F1 2019 enjoyed a decent second week with a 49% drop in weekly sales (which is a pretty solid performance for a game in its second week). The F1 games tend to be impacted by the popularity of the real world sport, which can vary depending on how competitive the season is proving to be.
This year's PES actually charts a place higher compared with 2017, but its sales are more than 40% lower than its predecessor. The absence of the Champions League from this year's title may have had a negative impact on its performance, and the series has been in general decline now for the best part of a decade.
There's a number of new games in the charts this week. PS4 exclusive Yakuza Kiwami 2 debuts at No.5, just ahead of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe but a fair few units behind that constantly selling Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy at No.4.
Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch exclusive Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate comes in at No.9.
Another PS4 exclusive narrowly misses out on the Top Ten in the form of VR game Firewall Zero Hour. Increased retail activity around PlayStation VR bundles saw a jump in sales for PlayStation VR Worlds (up 11 places to No.13 with an 86% sales increase) and Resident Evil 7 (up 61% in sales, jumping from No.39 to No.29).
Also new this week is Strange Brigade from Rebellion (physical retail distribution handled by Sold Out). The game is a new IP from the same team behind Sniper Elite and Zombie Army Trilogy. It hasn't charted especially well at retail (reaching No.16), although it may have fared better digitally.
