I'm looking at getting the kids a new gaming console for Christmas this year. I'm stuck trying to decide between getting an Xbox One or a PlayStation 4. I'm really wary on the PlayStation because of the 5 PS2s with broken optical drives sitting in my garage; none lasted more than two years. On the other hand, I'm also wary of buying a Microsoft product; I'm a Linux user for life after getting tired of their crappy operating system. I've also considered getting a gaming PC, whether Linux or Windows, but it's more expensive and game reviews show most are not as good as a dedicated game console. The kids want Fallout 4, and I want Star Wars Battlefront and any version ofGran Turismo. We currently have a Nintendo Wii and a crappy gaming PC with some Steam games. So, which gaming console should I get that will last a long time?

Unix isn’t the only operating system that came out of Bell Labs. In an effort to decouple hardware from user interfaces over a network, Bell also developed an OS named Plan 9 (named after the famously bad Ed Wood movie). While Plan 9 is still in use, it never got the momentum that Unix did. In 1996, Bell Labs (now AT&T) decided to shift its focus to Inferno, an operating system that was meant to challenge Java as a cross-platform virtual machine environment. Now LynxLine Labs has ported Inferno to the Raspberry Pi.
Not only did they do the work, they documented it in 26 labs if you want to follow along. Or, you can just head over to the project page and get the results along with updates (judging from the commit log, the project is under active development).

Star Wars Battlefront debuts at the top spot in the UK charts and has the fourth biggest week of any game this year.
The online-only shooter has the biggest launch for a Star Wars game, selling more than 117 per cent more units in its first week than previous record holder, 2008's Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
Chart-Track also says that it is the fast-selling non-sequel PlayStation 4 title ever, selling more than Destiny at launch. The title also sold considerably more on PlayStation 4 than it did Xbox. 59 per cent of Week One sales were for the PS4; 39 per cent on Xbox One while two per cent were on PC.
Black Ops III holds tight at second place in spite of a 50 per cent drop in sales, while last week’s No.1, Fallout 4, drops to third place as sales decline 80 per cent.
FIFA 16 rises one place to No.4 as sales increase 14 per cent week-over-week, while Rise of the Tomb Raider falls to fifth position with only a 37 per cent drop in sales.
Below is the software Top Ten for the week ending November 21st:
1. Star Wars: Battlefront, EA
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Activision Blizzard
3. Fallout 4, Bethesda
4. FIFA 16, EA
5. Rise of the Tomb Raider, Square Enix
6. LEGO Dimensions, Warner Bros
7. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft
8. Minecraft: Story Mode, Telltale Games
9. WWE 2K16, 2K Games
10. Need for Speed, EA

The jury remains out on the real market potential of virtual reality but analyst Superdata thinks it’s going to be a BIG hit.
VG247 reports that the company has predicted that a whopping 70m VR headsets will have been purchased by the end of 2017. This represents around $8.8bn in VR hardware revenue and $6.1bn in software sales.
It believes a massive 31 per cent of US console gamers will pick up a PlayStation VR and 18 per cent of PC gamers will but an Oculus Rift.
“Initially, affordable smartphone devices will drive the bulk of sales as consumers first explore virtual reality before committing to the more expensive platforms,” SuperData’s director of research Stephanie Llamas said.
“After this first wave, however, it will be especially console gamers that will spur growth of high-end VR devices.”
The consumer VR phenomenon kicked off last week with the official US launch of the $99 Samsung Gear VR. The first half of next year will see a flurry of activity in the market with Valve’s HTC Vive, Facebook’s Oculus Rift and Sony’s PlayStation VR all due for release.

We knew it was coming, but now it's finally here. Samsung's newly improved virtual reality headset, the Gear VR, is launching today in the US for $99. This iteration of the Gear VR is, without a doubt, the most consumer-ready VR headset to date. One of its downsides is that it only works with Samsung's latest smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge+ -- but that's great news for people who own handsets. As you may recall, Samsung's Gear VR is powered by Oculus software, and services like Hulu have already announced compatibility with the device. If you're Stateside, you can grab the Gear VR now from retailers including Amazon and Best Buy. As for worldwide availability, an Oculus spokesperson says that will be announced "soon."

Just in time for today's launch of Samsung's consumer Gear VR, developer and publisher CCP is making available for the headset. The virtual reality game, powered by Unreal Engine 4, is an arcade shooter that takes places in the EVE sci-fi universe. Once you strap in, you'll play the role of a gun turret operator, with the goal being to protect your mothership from some menacing pirates. In an interview earlier this year, Gunjack's producer told us that the title was different from Valkyrie, CCP's upcoming VR dogfighting simulator, as it required to be developed from the ground-up and with mobile gaming in mind. If you have your shiny new Gear VR all set up, you can grab Gunjack right now from the Oculus store for $10.

Virtual reality is nothing if not an awesome font for weird little experiences, but they can be kind of difficult to find. Some are on Steam, some are available elsewhere. Oculus is hoping that Oculus Concepts, its new section of the Gear VR's Oculus Store will make that easier. Concepts, like the name suggests, is a place where developers can toss their games and apps that might not be ready for primetime but are still worth checking out. One of the experiences shown off in official imagery is The Night Cafe: An Immersive Tribute to Van Goghwhich was part of the Oculus Mobile VR Jam earlier this year. Like the company notes, some of the biggest VR games hit that status because they were released to the public early. So if you have a shiny new Gear VR and are looking to check out something aside from Netflix, here you go.

Call of Duty, Fallout and Star Wars Battlefront must deliver if UK games retail is to turn around a difficult 2015.
According to GfK Chart-Track data, physical UK game sales are down 8.5 per cent so far this year. October was a particular disappointment, with sales slumping 24 per cent compared with 2014.
But the real challenge has been in the console space. UK stores tell MCV that console sales are down by almost 20 per cent this year.
“It’s a real worry, all the estimations at the start of the year was that 2015 would be one of growth,” reminded one head of games at a major UK retailer.
“The big games are launching later than usual, and we’re banking a lot on Black Ops III, Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront to deliver the revenue.”
His opinion echoes that of GAME CEO Martyn Gibbs, who told MCV: “If you look at the release schedule year-on-year, we had Destiny and Shadow of Mordor come out earlier in 2014. This year we have Battlefield, Call of Duty and Fallout in November, so the way we’ve expected things to phase is that September and October would be softer, and November stronger.”
Black Ops III launched last Friday to solid – if unspectacular – results (at least by Call of Duty standards).
The physical UK games market generated £50m last week, according to GfK Chart-Track, and one games store told MCV that software sales alone could hit £250m this month.

November 15th, 2015, 21:15 Posted By: wraggster
A market dedicated to selling retro games and merchandise takes place this weekend, and the organisers expect it to give a huge boost to retailers.
London Gaming Market is set for Sunday, November 15th at the Royal National Hotel in Russell Square, London, and will return on April 3rd, 2016, too. More than 40 retailers have signed up to exhibit.
Organiser Andy Brown says that although he’s not expecting Comic Con-sized attendance, he anticipates it will be a more lucrative event for stores.
“We are offering a single day shopping experience, both for retailers and customers, without the overheads of a multi-day event,” Brown told MCV.
“We don’t anticipate the same visitor numbers as other gaming events. However, every single person who attends the London Gaming Market is there for just one reason – to spend – so retailers should experience a much better return on the cost of attending, and shoppers don’t have to battle their way through a large event to find the stores.”
London Gaming Market is primarily focused on retro software and hardware, as well as tabletop games and tie-in products.

Along with a "mobile supercomputer," NVIDIA dropped off this teaser for Everest VR at its event earlier this week. Made by Sólfar Studios and RVX, it used NVIDIA's GPU to mash up over 300,000 high res pictures of the mountain range to create a 3D mesh and textures that is claimed to be the "definitive" CGI model of Everest. Some of Sólfar's personnel come from CCP where they worked on EVE Online, but this new company is all about creating purely VR experiences, like Everest for PCs and Godling for Playstation VR. I'm not going to climb Everest to find out exactly how realistic the simulation is, but everyone can form their own opinion when the full experience is available next year.

Here’s something that’s a little late to celebrate the fact that all the events in Back to the Future have happened in the past, but that’s what time machines are for, right? [Deater] created Pi-powered time circuits and a flux capacitor. He might not have a DeLorean, but he does have the equipment to turn a DeLorean into a cool car.
The ‘time circuits’ shown on-screen in Back to the Future actually weren’t very complex; the times were just cutouts with lights and gels; no real electronics wizardry necessary. Of course the BttF DeLorean has since been remodeled and refurbished with time circuits that look and act the part, and [Deater]’s time circuits have everything you would expect: a display of the destination, current, and last time, sound effects, numeric keypad, flux capacitor, and a speedometer.
While it doesn’t simulate the time circuits from the movie exactly, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The movie time circuits were colored gels, and wouldn’t exactly be practical for a Raspberry Pi-based prop. It’s a great build, and one that would look great in either a ’98 Nissan Altima or a DeLorean

Blockbuster shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops III has shot to number one in the Japanese retail charts, fighting off a number of home-grown titles.
The latest in Activision’s franchise (which is published by Sony on PlayStation in Japan) sold nearly 150,000 units on PS4, with a further 25,000 on PS3 – the latter version took third position in the software rankings, according to Famitsu.
Meanwhile, Disney Magical World 2, a sequel to the original 3DS life simulation game, swiped the second spot. It shifted almost 70,000 copies in its debut week.
The only other new entries were local efforts To-Love-Ru Darkness: True Princess for PlayStation Vita and Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force for PS4. The games sold around 20,000 and 15,000 copies to rest at fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The previous week’s best-selling game, God Eater Resurrection on Vita, fell to fourth position as sales dropped by around 95,000 in its second week. The PS4 version of the title vanished from the Top Ten altogether, despite taking the number two spot previously.
While Sony and Bandai Namco ruled the very top of the charts for another week, Nintendo once again held onto the bottom of the Top Ten. The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, Super Mario Maker and Splatoon filled out numbers eight, nine and 10, respectively.
Sales of both Mario Maker and Splatoon rose week-on-week, while the Zelda spin-off saw sales drop by about 8,000 units, dropping from third place.
Over in the hardware battle, PS4 reigned supreme for another week at the top of the rankings. It's handheld sibling, the Vita, fell back down the charts as Nintendo's New 3DS XL climbed back to second place.
Here is the software Top Ten for the week ending November 8th:

November 11th, 2015, 21:08 Posted By: wraggster
So my old Xbox 360 finally gave up its ghost last weekend and presented me with the most dreaded of error codes, the 'Red Ring of Death'. It wasn't an entirely shocking turn of events, mind you. I'd had that console since 2006 -- it survived four intra-state moves, countless roommates and a bitter ex armed with a croquet mallet (seriously Ashley, if you're reading this, you still owe me a croquet set) -- but the increasingly common and severe loading screen freezes made it clear my 360 was reaching the end of its operational service life.
Now I'm faced with a difficult choice: What gaming platform do I buy next? Do I suck it up and embrace Microsoft's current console, Xbox One? Should I jump ship to the PlayStation 4 which all my own friends own and use? Or, do I say goodbye to console gaming altogether and get one of those fancy new Oculus Rifts?

From time to time, we at Hackaday like to publish a few engineering war stories – the tales of bravery and intrigue in getting a product to market, getting a product cancelled, and why one technology won out over another. Today’s war story is from the most brutal and savage conflicts of our time, the console wars.
The thing most people don’t realize about the console wars is that it was never really about the consoles at all. While the war was divided along the Genesis / Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo fronts, the battles were between games. Mortal Kombat was a bloody battle, but in the end, Sega won that one. The 3D graphics campaign was hard, and the Starfox offensive would be compared to the Desert Fox’s success at the Kasserine Pass. In either case, only Sega’s 32X and the British 7th Armoured Division entering Tunis would bring hostilities to an end.
In any event, these pitched battles are consigned to be interpreted and reinterpreted by historians evermore. I can only offer my war story of the console wars, and that means a deconstruction of the hardware.

The latest entry in Activision’s Call of Duty series goes straight to the top of the UK boxed games charts.
91 per cent of Week One sales were for the newer PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while a measly nine per cent of units sold were for the the PS3 and 360.
This is the seventh biggest Call of Duty title in terms of revenue. This is likely the result of Black Ops III only launching on Friday – the first time in six years. Other Call of Duty titles launched on Tuesday, therefore we can’t really compare Black Ops III sales to that of last year’s Advanced Warfare.
Meanwhile, FIFA 16 rises on place to No.2. EA’s Need for Speed debuts in third place, too.
Sales of Halo 5: Guardians dropped 78 per cent last week as the sci-fi shooter falls from the top spot to No.4. Assassin’s Creed drops three places to No.5 as sales decline 55 per cent.
And further down the charts, a retailer promotion causes sales of Mario Kart 7 to shoot up 898 per cent to No.14.
Below is the software Top Ten for the week ending November 7th:
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Activision Blizzard
2. FIFA 16, EA
3. Need for Speed, EA
4. Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft
5. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Ubisoft
6. Minecraft: Story Mode, Telltale Games
7. WWE 2K16, 2K Games
8. Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar
9. LEGO Dimensions, Warner Bros
10. Call of Duty: Ghosts, Activision Blizzard

In a contrast to the UK’s Halo-ruled rankings, Japan’s retail charts were last week dominated by home-grown titles from the territory.
The only Western title to make the Top Ten was the debut of sports game NBA 2K16, which achieved seventh place, according to the latest data from Famitsu.
Both first and second position were claimed by the Vita and PS4 versions of Bandai Namco’s God Eater Resurrection, respectively, which managed combined sales of over 140,000.
The game's Vita version once again proved the ongoing popularity of Sony's handheld system in Japan, outselling its home console sbling by more than four times.
The only other new entry was Nippon Ichi’s Yomawari, which claimed fourth, below 3DS Zelda spin-off Tri Force Heroes.
God Eater’s preference for PlayStation helped PS4 and Vita to swipe the top two positions in the hardware chart, respectively.
While Halo was absent from the software Top Ten following its release in Japan on October 29th (three days before the data was collated), its launch may have helped Xbox One sales in the region, as the console rose from its traditional tenth place to sit above the 3DS XL in ninth.
Here is the Top Ten software chart for the week ending November 1st:
- God Eater Resurrection (Bandai Namco) Vita – 114,994 (New)
- God Eater Resurrection (Bandai Namco) PS4 – 28,487 (New)
- The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (Nintendo) 3DS – 21,292
- Yomawari (Nippon Ichi) Vita – 21,196 (New)
- Super Mario Maker (Nintendo) Wii U – 12,823
- Yo-Kai Watch Busters: Akaneko-dan/Shiroinu-tai (Level 5) 3DS – 12,806
- NBA 2K16 (2K Games) PS4 – 8,499 (New)
- Splatoon (Nintendo) Wii U – 8,113
- Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (Nintendo) 3DS – 6,869
- Katachi Shinhakken! Picross 3D 2 (Nintendo) 3DS – 5,971

Almost a quarter of PS4, Xbox One and Wii U owners are waiting for a Black Friday bonanza before buying games.
That data is courtesy of Ipsos Mori’s GameTrack research, conducted on behalf of MCV.
The figures showed that - across all types of gamers - 16 per cent say they’re waiting for Black Friday discounting to pick up this Christmas’ biggest blockbusters.
13 per cent of gamers say they will buy consoles and/or games on that day, instead of at other times.
The figures show how the sales event has had a fundamental impact on the way consumers are buying products at Christmas. 85 per cent of gamers are aware of Black Friday, GameTrack figures show.
Yet, despite its impact on their buying habits, 32 per cent of those surveyed said they actively dislike the idea of the sales event.
Black Friday is historically a US promotion, and launched in the UK as part of an Amazon campaign five years ago. Last year it took off in a major way when multiple other retailers started their own activity.
Black Friday this year takes place on November 27th.
GAME boss Martyn Gibbs told MCV last month how he expects this year’s event to be even bigger than 2014 and, despite the damage it is doing to video game margins, views it as a way to attract new customers.
“It’s not about just one day for us,” said Gibbs. “It’s about the opportunity of recruiting tens of thousands of new customers into our ecosystem.”
In more positive news, 11 per cent of gamers familiar with Black Friday said that they would likely end up buying more games and consoles as a result of the discounting.
These figures were part of research conducted by Ipsos Mori, which spoke to 1,899 consumers across the UK – including 1,501 who identify themselves as gamers.

A new study from the Pew Research Centre has strengthened the argument that console content makers should be making more effort to appeal to females.
Its Technology Device Ownership 2015 report shows that 42 per cent of US women own a games console compared to 37 per cent of men.
In total 40 per cent of US adults own a console. Ownership is more likely the further you go down the age brackets, with 56 per cent of 18-29 year olds having a console compared to 55 per cent of 30-49 year olds, 30 per cent of 50-64 year olds and eight per cent of those aged 65 or over.
The likelihood of ownership also increased along with household income. There was also more console ownership among ethnic groups.
The real story of the report, however, is the increasing ubiquity of smartphones. Currently 68 per cent of US adults own one, up from 35 per cent in 2011. Tablet ownership is also up to 45 per cent.
This rise comes at the cost of more specialised devices, however. E-reader ownership has fallen from 32 per cent in early 2014 to 19 per cent. Among the younger age groups MP3 player ownership has plummeted from 75 per cent in 2010 to 51 per cent now. Computer ownership has fallen from 88 per cent to 78 per cent in the same period.
The report is based on a sample size of 1,907 US adults across all 50 US states.
