British Parliament has announced an inquiry into the growth of "immersive and addictive technologies" such as virtual and augmented realities.
Led by members of parliament from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport committee, the Immersive and Addictive Technologies inquiry will also investigate areas such as esports, the connection between gaming and gambling, and social media addiction.
In an effort to deliver infrastructure, regulation and "keep pace with the increasing digitisation and 'gamification' of people's lives" the committee will scrutinise the impact of immersive technologies, with a particular focus on young people.
With a deadline of January 14, 2019, committee members are currently accepting written evidence from businesses, charities, and individuals.
"During our recent inquiries, the committee has heard repeated concerns about the impact to society of the increasing amounts of time that people spend immersed in online worlds, and the potentially addictive nature of social media and gaming," said committee chair Damian Collins.

The "previously muted" free-to-play console sector saw its revenue triple year-on-year to $64 million during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, according to the latest report from SuperData.
Overall digital spending for the holiday period was up by 14.5% year-on-year; premium console spend climbed 24.5% to reach $1 billion worldwide, while PC was up 18.3% to generate $586 million.
While Fortnite was name-checked in the soaring console free-to-play revenue, SuperData also attributed the increased digital spend to content deals and big releases like Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII and Red Dead Redemption II.
"Video games have become a layered experience," said SuperData managing director Joost Van Dreunen.
"Beyond just a big, loud launch, blockbuster titles today rely on a variety of different consumer touchpoints, including live streaming video, real-life events, digital sales, and crossplay multiplayer gameplay."
In the US last year, in-game spending accounted for 80.1% of all digital games revenue, SuperData reports. In total, it contributed $15.3 billion to the digital games spend for 2017 -- a trend the market intelligence firm expects to continue through this year.

November 27th, 2018, 16:07 Posted By: wraggster
It's a bumper week for UK video game sales, with 1.66 million boxed games sold and more than £53 million in revenue.
Unfortunately, it's a weaker Black Friday than last year, with revenue down 4.6 per cent and unit sales down 6.7 per cent.
There's a few caveats to consider, of course. The first is that digital sales are not included - we do not know if download sales over Black Friday were up or down. In addition, Black Friday ran for a far longer period this year, having started (in some cases) up to two weeks before.
Discounting on FIFA 19 propelled the EA game to the top of the charts (it was also bundled with PS4 consoles). The title's average selling price was just over £30 (on Switch), and under £40 (on Xbox One and PS4), which meant the game shot up 177 per cent in sales to reclaim No.1.
Also firing back up the charts with an impressive 360 per cent sales rise was Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Activision's game was discounted even further, selling at just over £35 on average.
It means Red Dead Redemption 2 (which wasn't discounted) fell to No.3. But even the Rockstar game enjoyed a small sales improvement (up 36 per cent) thanks to hardware bundling with PS4.
All of this means that the one big new release of the week, Battlefield V, had to settle for No.4. It's not a great start for EA's shooter, with launch sales down more than 63 per cent compared with 2016's Battlefield 1. Even with the expected rise in digital sales, it seems like the shooter is another AAA title to struggle in the current marketplace. However, it did perform better in its first week than titles such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Fallout 76.
One interesting stat about Battlefield V is that the game sold best (in a box) on Xbox One. Microsoft's console accounted for 50 per cent of the game's sales.
It wasn't the only new release in the charts, however. The impressive Farming Simulator 2019 makes it to No.16, while Bendy and the Ink Machine comes in at No.30.
As for last week's big new games, Fallout 76 dropped 51 per cent in sales week-on-week. Bethesda's game was discounted slightly over Black Friday (barely a week since it came out) and now sits at No.7.
The online title is just ahead of Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu at No.8, which saw sales drop 43 per cent week-on-week. That game's sister title, Pokémon Let's Go Eevee, dropped 55 per cent in sales and is at No.18.
However, it was Spyro Reignited Trilogy that endured the heaviest fall. Sales fell 62 per cent week-on-week and the game tumbled from No.1 to No.9.
Black Friday is a big sales period for hardware, and you'll often find exclusive games (particularly those bundled with the consoles) tend to perform strongly during the weekend. According to retailers talking to Gamesindustry.biz, more than 300,000 consoles were sold over Black Friday. It was pretty close between all three formats, but we understand that PS4 was the best-selling machine, narrowly ahead of Xbox One, which was narrowly ahead of Nintendo Switch. Over Black Friday, PS4 consoles were being sold at just over £220 (with bundles featuring FIFA 19 or Red Dead Redemption 2), Xbox One was on sale for as low as £170 with a game (including Forza Horizon 4, Minecraft or Battlefield V), while Nintendo Switch saw its first real price drop, falling by around £20 in price overall.
As a result, Xbox One exclusives such as Forza Horizon 4 (No.5), Minecraft Master Edition (No.33) and Forza Motorsport 7 (No.34) all shot up the charts, with sales rising 535 per cent, 1768 per cent and 573 per cent respectively.
PS4 exclusives Spider-Man (No.6), God of War (No.21) and Detroit: Become Human (No.35), saw sales rise 634 per cent, 1283 per cent and 826 per cent respectively.

November 26th, 2018, 16:18 Posted By: wraggster
October, a historically major month for big game releases, didn't disappoint. Between Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Red Dead Redemption II, and continued sales of other strong titles, October's report from the NPD group was a promising one for almost everyone involved.
Across all categories, spending on video games was up 73% year-over-year to $1.5 billion, with every category seeing growth. It's the highest total spend the NPD Group has seen in October since it began tracking in 1995.
Sony was solidly in charge this month with the PS4 standing as the best-selling hardware platform for October and keeping it firmly in its position as the best-selling console for 2018 so far. That's not all, though. PS4 sales in October reached an all-time platform high in October, and unit sales reached the highest number of any PlayStation hardware in October since the PlayStation 2 in 2002.
Xbox One sales were also up, which combined with PlayStation sales and offset somewhat by declines on other platforms saw overall hardware spending up 26% year-over-year to $300 million.
Accessory and game card spending grew 54 percent year-over-year to $280 million, an all-time high. Much of this was driven by headset and headphone sales, which have doubled year-over-year and are currently lead by Turtle Beach.
And finally, in software, Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII's launch month dollar sales represented the 8th highest ever since the NPD group began tracking in 1995. This naturally made it the best-selling game of the year and the second best-selling game over the last twelve months (beaten only by its predecessor, Call of Duty: WWII).

Rockstar and parent Take-Two Interactive appear to have abandoned the long-in-development espionage title Agent.
Don't remember Agent? That's not surprising. The game was first announced as a PS3 exclusive during Sony's press conference at E3 2009. Since then, little to nothing has been heard of it.
And it's unlikely we'll ever hear of it again, as the filing for Agent on the US Patent and Trademark Office website (spotted by DualShockers) states the mark is "Dead... Refused/Dismissed or Invalidated".
The status was updated on November 19 on the grounds that the publisher has not filed a Statement of Use or Extension Request after receiving a Notice of Allowance.
Interestingly, it looks like Take-Two and Rockstar may have still had plans for the game - or at least wanted to protect the trademark - as recently as two years ago, since the former was granted an extension on April 14, 2018.

Valve has rewarded a man with $20,000 after he discovered a bug which let people generate thousands of free codes at once for any game.
The flaw was rooted out by security researcher Artem Moskowsky who reported it to Valve on August 7.
Valve fixed the issue weeks ago and it has since been made public via HackerOne.
By changing a single parameter, any person with a developer account on the portal could generate thousands of activation keys simultaneously for any other game hosted by Steam.
Speaking with The Register, Moskowsky says he found the bug by chance while exploring the functionality of a web application.
"To exploit the vulnerability, it was necessary to make only one request," he said. "I managed to bypass the verification of ownership of the game by changing only one parameter. After that, I could enter any ID into another parameter and get any set of keys."
While testing the extent of the flaw, Moskowsky entered a string of random numbers as a request and received 36,000 keys for Portal 2.

Microsoft will knock $100 off the price of Xbox One X over Black Friday.
The company says it will be offering a series of aggressive price discounting over the sales weekend, including an X for $399. The company also plans to discount its big 2018 games including State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4.

For a third week running, Red Dead Redemption 2 retains the No.1 spot at UK physical games retail.
Although sales are down 53% week-on-week, Rockstar's Wild West epic holds onto just over 30% of the market.
From last week, the top five remains unchanged with Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII leading FIFA 19 by a just a few hundred units, and Forza Horizon 4 staying ahead of Marvel's Spider-Man.
Each of the top five saw a week-on-week sales decline save for Spider-Man, which remained static.
The only new entry in the top ten is LEGO DC Super-Villains which has clawed itself up from No. 12 to No. 10, ending the brief stay of Football Manager 2019 which fell to No. 13.
Overall, there are five new entries into the top 40, though Carnival Games is the only newly released title, entering at No. 20.

Valve has said it will "not tolerate racist language between pro players in any form" after two separate incidents directed at Chinese teams during professional DOTA 2 matches.
Andrei "skem" Ong from Complexity Gaming was formally reprimanded by his team -- receiving the maximum fine -- for a racist comment he made towards Chinese team Royal Never Give Up during the DreamLeague tournament earlier this month.
Just days later, Carlo "Kuku" Palad from TNC Pro Team used the same slur during another match, which resulted in thousands of Chinese players review-bombing DOTA 2 on Steam after Valve failed to take action against either player.

Capcom has alluded to its future plans for cloud-based games, suggesting the Resident Evil 7 experiment has been a success - although not a financial one.
In a Q&A released following the Japanese firm's results for the first half of the fiscal year, the publisher was asked by shareholders about its stance on cloud gaming.
Earlier this year, Capcom released Resident Evil 7: Cloud Version - a streamed version of the hit horror title for Nintendo Switch. In the Q&A, the firm reiterated this was an experiment, but it seems to have been a promising one.
"While we did release a certain title supporting cloud gaming in the first half, this was done primarily for technological research purposes and did not have a significant impact on earnings," the company wrote.
"Based on the results of the research, we will internally consider further expansion into cloud gaming."
The shareholders' question was no doubt prompted by increasing interest in cloud-based gaming products and services over the past six months. Most notably, Microsoft announced Project xCloud, a streaming service that delivers Xbox games to any device.

November 5th, 2018, 20:58 Posted By: wraggster
VR pioneer Palmer Luckey has said that no currently announced VR hardware is good enough to appeal to mainstream - even at a price of "$0.00," the existing and imminent headsets would fail to engage a big enough audience.
In a blog post titled "Free isn't cheap enough," the founder of Oculus VR argued hardware sales as a "meaningless metric" for judging the success of VR. That can only be measured through engagement, Luckey said, which is "the number of people logging in and spending money each week."
"Recent market experiments with cheap VR hardware have shown that there are millions of people willing to buy said hardware, but very few among them continue to use the hardware or invest in the software ecosystem for very long," Luckey said, apparently referring to lower priced headsets like Oculus Go.
"This is true even when people get the hardware for free - the millions of cardboard boxes fulfilling their ultimate destiny on the back shelf of a closet don't do much for the VR industry. Why the lack of use?"

Ubisoft has revealed today it will be making a number of cosmetic changes to Rainbow Six Siege as the game prepares for release in Asian territories. These changes will be made in all versions of the game for a "single, global vision" of the title as opposed to multiple builds.
The aesthetic changes include removal of skulls, references to gambling, sexual content, and environmental blood to conform with content regulations in certain countries. Some icons will be changed (such as the melee icon from a dagger to a fist) as well.

Red Dead Redemption 2 retains the No.1 spot at UK physical games retail.
Sales fell 51% week-on-week, which is an impressive result for a AAA action game in its second week on the market. In fact, it is the most successful second week for a game recorded all year (all the more impressive when you consider that FIFA 19 had this year's biggest opening weekend).
The big new release in the charts this week is Football Manager 2019 from Sega. As a PC release, the game would have primarily sold digitally (it's No.1 in the Steam charts) but it was released physically as well, and debuts at No.9.
Just ahead of it at No.8 is the LEGO Harry Potter Collection. Although it's technically a re-entry (it was previously available on PS4), the game jumps 683% in sales on the back of its launch on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. The game arrives just in time for the new Fantastic Beasts movie next week, so expect it to hang around.
It's one of four LEGO games in the charts - with LEGO DC Super-Villains at No.12, LEGO The Incredibles at No.24 and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 at No.32.
Also receiving a bump in sales this week - driven by a new platform release - is Diablo III: Eternal Collection. The game's arrival on Switch this week sees the Blizzard game reach No.12.
One new game that didn't chart this week is Taiko No Tatusujin: Drum 'n' Fun on Nintendo Switch. Although it does debut at No.11 in the Switch charts. There was a version of the game that came with its own drum accessory.

Market analytics firm Digi-Capital revealed this week that games deals have already exceed a record $25 billion in the first nine months of 2018.
However, as Digi-Capital noted, this "could signal top of the market"; when this previously happened in 2014 games investment and M&A plunged immediately to the lowest level in a decade.
"The games deals cycle has swung from boom to bust twice already since 2010, so the next six months will determine if history repeats itself or the dollars continue to flow," said managing director Tim Merel.
While the latest report from Digi-Capital highlights the "unprecedented" level of investment witnessed in 2018, M&A have yet to reach the same heights of 2016, and the games IPO market has almost entirely evaporated.

Worldwide digital spending on console reached $1.24 billion for September, up from $912 million the same month last year, according to the latest figures from SuperData.
The increase continues a "string of high-growth months going into the holiday season", driven by the popularity of Fortnite and a slew of AAA launches, such as FIFA 19 which was the best digital launch in franchise history.
SuperData estimates that FIFA 19 digital console units grew 18 per cent compared to FIFA 18, hitting another record despite lagging behind other AAA franchise in terms of download rates.
Marvel's Spider-Man was Sony' biggest digital launch to date, selling 2.17 million units on PlayStation 4 -- excluding bundled sales -- just edging out the God of War launch earlier this year.
Meanwhile, the Destiny 2 Forsaken expansion beat out Fortnite to take the number one digital console rankings spot, with over 60 per cent of all active users purchasing the expansion.
Finally, although NBA 2K19 enjoyed a new peak of digital console sales, overall growth fell short of the rate seen over the past couple of years.

Video games media specialists Future will close two of its multiformat magazines.
GamesTM and GamesMaster are producing their final issues. Staff who worked on these publications are being 'redeployed' within the company.
GamesMaster has been running for 25 years and say it's 'the UK's biggest multiformat magazine'. GamesTM is also a multiformat product and has been running since 2002. It was originally owned by Imagine Publishing, but the entire Imagine portfolo was acquired by Future in 2016.

Tomorrow, the biggest video game of 2018 finally arrives on shelves. And we mean that in various senses of the word, because from the sounds of it Red Dead Redemption 2 takes the open-world genre to new and wider frontiers.
Rockstar Games' first original title this generation is the follow-up to the acclaimed 2010 Wild West outing and critics agree that practically every aspects has been improved upon manifold - although some are quick to differentiate between this and the studio's flagship franchise.
"Anybody coming to Red Dead Redemption 2 expecting Grand Theft Auto with horses will be rather baffled by this slow-paced, sumptuous, character-driven Old West historical drama, in which you spend probably 60% of your time simply riding around the American wilderness," writes Keza MacDonald in her five-star review for The Guardian.
"There's action too, in the form of shootouts, train robberies and frequent thrilling escapes on horseback, but these flashes of excitement punctuate a game that is largely about just being somewhere; about hunting, fishing and having long conversations on cross-country rides or around a campfire."

Skepticism about cryptocurrencies is spreading. In its latest whitepaper, "Can Bitcoin Bounce Back?", Juniper Research identifies a number of trends that have shown declining fortunes for cryptocurrencies in the last year, as well as factors that could make it difficult for the market to stage any kind of resurgence.
"In short, given our concerns around both the innate valuation of Bitcoin, and of the operating practices of many exchanges, we feel that the industry is on the brink of an implosion," the firm said.

Rockstar Games and Take-Two have had a recent history of taking legal action against cheat makers for their games, especially Grand Theft Auto V. And last month, this action took the form of a search and asset seizure against the Australian developers of a particularly well-known cheat.
TorrentFreak reports that the court order, filed last month, is against five people who are believed to be connected to a notable GTA V cheat known as "Infamous." The five are to be prohibited from cheating or distributing cheating software, and have additionally had their assets (including digital and cryptocurrency) frozen.
