Raspberry Pi is positioned to become the bestselling UK-made computer of all time, according to a new BBC report.
Ahead of Raspberry Pi 2's launch later this month, founder Ebon Upton tells BBC that lifetime sales for Raspberry Pi have reached 4.5m – just 500,000 shy of overtaking the ZX Spectrum, originally debuted in 1982 by Sinclair and pulled from retail in 1992.
Raspberry Pi sells an average of 200,000 units per month, but that figure is expected to be up with the impending launch of the new model – the tech of which makes it six times more powerful for a variety of applications, according to Upton.
"There comes a point when there's no substitute for more memory and CPU performance," Upton wrote on the Raspberry Pi blog.
"Our challenge was to figure out how to get this without throwing away our investment in the platform or spoiling all those projects and tutorials which rely on the precise details of the Raspberry Pi hardware."
Raspberry Pi 2 will also offer free access to Microsoft's upcoming Windows 10 OS.
"Raspberry Pi has quickly become one of the Maker community's favorite platforms because their highly-capable, low-cost boards and compute modules enable developers to bring their vision to life," Windows IoT Group GM Kevin Dallas wrote over on the official Windows blog.
"Raspberry Pi 2 is a surprisingly powerful device that opens up the world of computing and programming to a huge range of people and skill levels.”

Six brand new releases resulted in a brand-new chart-topping title in Japan last week.
According to the latest data provided by Famitsu, last week’s top dog Tales of Zestiria was knocked down to third place, as unit sales of the title fell by almost 300,000.
In its place sat Atlus’ latest entry in its Shin Megami Tensei series, Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker.
At number two came Ubisoft’s PS4 edition of open-world shooter Far Cry 4. The PS3 version sat in fifth.
Among the other new entries last week was Bandai Namco title Yowamushi Pedal: Asu eno High Cadence for 3DS, which sat just above fellow 3DS release Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire in sixth position.
The PS4 and PS3 releases of Koei Tecmo’s Bladestorm: Nightmare rounded out the Top Ten at numbers nine and ten, respectively. The games sold within 700 units of each other.
Over in the hardware chart, the rankings look very similar to last week.
One change is the rise of Sony’s PS4 console over its Vita handheld, becoming the second-best-selling hardware in Japan for the week.
The PS3, meanwhile, slipped below the Wii U in terms of sales.
Here’s the software Top Ten for the week ending February 1st:
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker (Atlus) 3DS – 52,368 (New)
- Far Cry 4 (Ubisoft) PS4 – 37,725 (New)
- Tales of Zestiria (Bandai Namco) PS3 – 29,606

- Far Cry 4 (Ubisoft) PS3 – 23,686 (New)
- Yowamushi Pedal: Asu eno High Cadence (Bandai Namco) 3DS – 18,800 (New)
- Pocket Monster Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (Pokémon) 3DS – 13,914
- Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (Nintendo) Wii U – 12,453
- Bladestorm: Nightmare (Koei Tecmo) PS4 – 9,842 (New)
- Bladestorm: Nightmare (Koei Tecmo) PS3 – 9,155 (New)
And here are the hardware sales for the same period:
- New Nintendo 3DS XL – 19,638
- PS4 – 13,971
- PS Vita – 12,949
- New Nintendo 3DS – 7,419
- Wii U – 6,716
- PS3 – 5,941
- Nintendo 3DS XL – 3,327
- Nintendo 3DS – 2,627
- PS Vita TV – 487
- Xbox One – 291

A new and faster Raspberry Pi 2 model has been made available for sale at the same price as the previous B+ version.
The $35 micro-computer features a 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU, which the organisation claims makes it six times more powerful than other models. As a result of the new processor, it can also run a number of operating systems such as Snappy Ubuntu Core and Windows 10, the latter of which will be free. It also houses 1GB of Ram and is compatible with the first Raspberry Pi.
Despite the new model’s release, the Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+, B and B+ will continue to be available for sale as long as demand continues.

While Raspberry Pi fans were told to expect a brand new board somewhere around 2017, it turns out that wasn't quite true. This is the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B: a substantial upgrade from the Model B+ that will go on sale later today for $35/£25. The new board has some fundamental upgrades that could well warrant the upgrade for existing Raspberry Pi dabblers -- that is, if smaller wasn't better. Raspberry Pi Foundation lead Eben Upton told The Register that the new Model B "is a usable PC now." A fact borne out by official support for Windows 10."You could use a Raspberry Pi 1 as a PC but you had to say 'this is a great PC in so far as it cost me 35 bucks'. We've removed the caveat that you had to be a bit forgiving with it. Now it's just good."

January 30th, 2015, 01:02 Posted By: wraggster

For his PhD at the University of Michigan, [Adam] designed a Raspberry Pi-based system that controls an HCCI engine, a type of engine which combines the merits of both diesel and gasoline engines. These engines exhibit near-chaotic behavior and are very challenging to model, so he developed a machine learning algorithm on a Raspberry Pi that adaptively learns how to control the engine.
[Adam]’s algorithm needs real-time readings of cylinder pressures and the crankshaft angle to run. To measure this data on a Raspberry Pi, [Adam] designed a daughterboard that takes readings from pressure sensors in each cylinder and measures the crankshaft angle with an encoder. The Pi is also equipped with a CAN transceiver that communicates with a low-level engine control unit.
[Adam]’s algorithm calculates engine control parameters in real-time on the Pi based on the pressure readings and crankshaft position. The control values are sent over CAN to the low-level engine controller. The Pi monitors changes in the engine’s performance with the new values, and makes changes to its control values to optimize the combustion cycle as the engine runs. The Pi also serves up a webpage with graphs of the crankshaft position and cylinder pressure that update in real-time to give some user feedback.
For all the juicy details, take a look at [Adam]’s paper we linked above. For a more visual breakdown, check out the video after the break where [Adam] walks you through his setup and the awesome lab he gets to work in.

Offering iPads as in-flight entertainment systems is so 2014. Australian carrier Qantas will soon welcome a new breed of gadget onboard -- the Samsung Gear VR, along with a Galaxy Note 4 to power it. The phone's loaded with a special app that shows you 360-degree views of the carrier's first-class lounges and even a virtual reality boat ride. You can also use it to watch a movie, but unfortunately, if you want to marathonHouse of Cards, you'll have to use your own laptop or tablet for that. See, the bad news is that there will be a limited number of Gear VRs available, and it's not accessible to everyone flying Qantas: only folks in Business Class aboard an Airbus A380 going from LA to Sydney or from Melbourne to LA can borrow one. Even then, they're expected to use it only for a limited time, so other people can take their turn.

Around the time Oculus VR began experimenting internally with the creation of tech demos, investor Marc Andreessen, impressed with what he'd seen, urged Brendan Iribe, Oculus VR's CEO, to show them off to Hollywood. Andreessen believed the medium was a perfect fit for that industry. Iribe, in turn, showed his company'sprototype Rift technology to an unnamed, major Hollywood director. That director, responding the way most do when they first encounter modern-day virtual reality, enthusiastically implored Iribe to join forces and create a feature film with it. Iribe immediately balked and shot down the offer. "I don't know the first thing about movies," he says of that initial conversation.
That was then. Today, Oculus VR plans to figure out the entertainment industry in a big way. With Story Studio, an in-house innovation lab focused on exploring and sharing tools and techniques to craft entertainment experiences within VR, the Facebook-owned company is embarking on a different path. Outside "guest directors" will be brought in to work with the studio and lead Creative Director Saschka Unseld, a former Pixar director, in what is essentially a VR workshop. And along the way, Oculus hopes to refine what it means to inhabit VR on a cinematic level, beginning with its first animated short, Lost, which will debut at Sundance.

"People dream about flying." That's what Max Rheiner, creator of Birdly, a virtual reality experience that lets you feel what it's like to fly as a bird from a first-person perspective, said about the inspiration for his project. Rheiner, who's head of the masters program in interaction at the Zurich University of the Arts, is showcasingBirdly at Sundance 2015, as part of the festival's New Frontier exhibit, which brings creators utilizing unusual mediums to express their narratives under one roof, each with a different story to tell. In Birdly's case, that medium would be an Oculus Rift headset paired alongside a plastic surface (think of it as an inverted dentist chair) and a fan for the wind effect, creating an embodiment that's meant to spawn a full-body VR experience.

When we think of groundbreaking technology announcements -- the sort of things that make you sit back and reflect on just how far we've come as a species of innovators -- it's easy to jump to the likes of Apple, Google and Tesla before you even consider Microsoft. After all, the possibilities of something like self-driving cars, or a modular cellphone are inherently more interesting than yet another version of Windows. But with this week's surprising announcement of Project HoloLens, futuristic shades that paint your world with realistic holograms, and its accompanying Windows Holographic platform, Microsoft proved that it too can leave us dumbfounded with a new gadget that puts all of our science fiction fantasies just within reach. The only problem? Microsoft now needs to focus hard on not screwing it up. And given its history, there's no guarantee it won't.

As previously rumored, Google has discontinued selling Google Glass, its augmented-reality headset... but it could be coming out with something new and (supposedly) improved. The company has placed a relentlessly positive spin on its decision: "Glass was in its infancy, and you took those very first steps and taught us how to walk," reads a posting on the Google+ page for Glass. "Well, we still have some work to do, but now we're ready to put on our big kid shoes and learn how to run." Formerly a project of the Google X research lab, Glass will now be overseen by Tony Fadell, the CEO of Google subsidiary (and Internet of Things darling) Nest; more than a few Glass users are unhappy with Google's decision. If Google's move indeed represents a quiet period before a relaunch, rather than an outright killing of the product, what can it do to ensure that Glass's second iteration proves more of a success? Besides costing less (the original Glass retailed for $1,500 from Google's online storefront), Google might want to focus on the GoPro audience, or simply explain to consumers why they actually need a pair of glasses with an embedded screen. What else could they do to make Glass 2.0 (whatever it looks like) succeed?

Xbox One sales hit a new low in Japan last week, selling just 300 units within the time frame.
Games Industry calls attention to the abysmal figure, along with the fact that the console has been the tenth best (lowest) selling device on Media Create's hardware chart for two straight weeks.
To compare, the hardware category's ninth place finisher PlayStation Vita TV sold 682 units, and the original 3DS sold 4,328 units to finish in eighth.
Microsoft expressed disappointment back in October at lackluster sales of Xbox One in Japan, but promised to continue its efforts in reaching a substantial audience within the region. However, the latest numbers confirm the worst week for the console since its launched in the country last September.
You'll find the full chart below:
- New 3DS XL: 25,299
- PlayStation Vita: 16,823
- PlayStation 4: 15,480
- New 3DS: 9,916
- Wii U: 8,894
- PlayStation 3: 7,036
- 3DS LL: 4,776
- 3DS: 4,238
- PlayStation Vita TV: 682
- Xbox One: 300

Oculus Rift developers can now just use Firefox Nightly instead of downloading a completely separate build, as its newest version comes with web VR capabilities. Mozilla's been developing virtual reality features for the web for quite some time now, but it initially decided to load APIs onto a standalone experimental build that works with Rift headsets. Problem is, that version's other features always lag behind the other builds, since it focuses on virtual reality. By adding VR to one of the regular experimental versions, Mozilla will be able to speed up its development process. The developers are hoping that this change will soon enable them to release a Direct-to-Rift feature, as well as support for Linux and Firefox for Android.

Without a doubt, the biggest surprise from today's Windows 10 keynote at Microsoft's Redmond campus was the outfit unveiling its HoloLens headset. Dubbed as the "first fully untethered, holographic computer" the device and its capabilities looked pretty neat -- if a little fantastical -- onstage when Alex Kipman showed it off. But for all his talk about breaking down the walls between technology and people, there are a surprising amount of them around exactly what the device is packing under the hood. We asked every person at the event that we could (developers, public relations folks, engineers) about the specs of the dev kit we tried, and were shot down at every turn. No one would give a single, concrete detail. So let's break down what was said during the stage demo (embedded below) and what Microsoft has released via the HoloLens website instead, shall we?

During the end-of-year holiday period in Japan, videogame software sales amounted to 10.854 million units, reports Japanese sales tracker Media Create. All said and done, software sales were nearly identical to the same period the year prior—100.36% of 2013.
The relatively healthy software sales can be attributed primarily to the Nintendo 3DS, whose library contains popular games such as Yo-kai Watch 2 (2.447 million across all three versions) and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (2.591 million copies sold across two versions if the double pack was counted as two copies per one unit).
To put that in perspective, Yo-kai Watch 2 and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire accounted for nearly 45% of total Japanese software sales during the end-of-year holiday period.
Aside from the Nintendo 3DS, the Wii U was the only platform that saw an increase in software sales. In the case of Wii U, software sales were 112.95% of 2013. Unfortunately, Wii U software didn’t make up for the decrease in Wii software sales, and during Christmas week PlayStation software dropped to 41.30% of 2013, so ultimately it can be said that the 3DS was the only healthy platform in Japan during the end-of-year season.
Meanwhile, total hardware sales during the end-of-year season came to 1.74 million units. Unlike software sales, hardware decreased to 83.42% of the same period from 2013. Even the Nintendo 3DS decreased slightly to 93.96% of 2013, owing to the fact that most of its popular software sold to existing 3DS owners rather than new buyers.
Note: To calculate end-of-year sales, Media Create tracked the seven weeks from November 17th, 2014 – January 4th, 2015. All data above pertains to this period unless otherwise specified.

With tiny, Internet-connected computers everywhere these days, home automation is finally hitting it big. [Jelora] was looking for a few more home automation projects and realized his electric meter had a pair of ‘digital information outputs’. With a Raspberry Pi and a few bits of wire, he figured out how to read this digital output and put a log of his electricity consumption up on the web.
The digital output on [Jelora]’s meter is a bit odd; it’s 1200 bps, 7 bits per character, parity, with one stop bit. It’s also a 50 kHz AC signal for a binary ‘0’ and nothing for a binary ‘1’. To read this signal, [Jelora] is using a diode to throw out half the signal, a 6N138 optoisolator so the Pi isn’t connected directly to the meter, and a small cap to smooth out the signal. Simple, and it works.
This cleaned up signal is then connected to serial to USB chip and a PHP script scrapes the data every minute. The data received from the meter is stored in a data base along with a few other bits of information: if the meter is being charged peak or off-peak rates, and the price per kWh. All this is saved on an IDE hard drive (more reliable than the SD card, surprisingly), and a ‘electricity cost per day’ is plotted on a nifty graph and served up by the Raspberry Pi.

The UK boxed video games market generated £2.294bn in 2014, MCV can reveal.
GfK Chart-Track says that the figure, which combines sales of boxed games, consoles and accessories, is a 12 per cent improvement over the year prior.
The increase was almost entirely down to huge sales of PS4 and Xbox One, with £915m generated from the sale of consoles in 2014 - that’s an increase of 46 per cent year-on-year.
PS4 ended the year as the UK’s No.1 games console, according to Sony.
Accessories sales shot up seven per cent to £431m, driven once again by PS4 and Xbox One peripherals as well as online points cards.
But it wasn’t all good news. Boxed software sales slumped seven per cent to £948m. It’s the first time boxed games market income has fallen under £1bn in more than a generation.
Meanwhile, despite a significant increase in revenue, the actual number of video games, consoles and accessories that were sold last year fell six per cent. 58.6m physical video game items were sold at retail in 2014 versus 62.6m in 2013.

Samsung took a distinctly different tack from Oculus VR in developing virtual reality tech. Whereas Oculus has a dedicated device, Samsung simply has a high-tech piece of headgear that you strap a Galaxy Note 4 phone into. A review popped up at Ars Technica after a month using the device, and they say it works surprisingly well. Quoting: "Though the weight of the two units is comparable, the Gear VR benefits from a strap system that distributes that weight on the upper forehead and the back of the skull rather than through an elastic death grip around the eye area."
They still say a purchase is hard to justify, simply because the content selection is lacking. But as that improves, the price tag will become worth it. "Simple, minimally interactive virtual reality experiences like The Deep, BluVR, and Titans of Space have become go-to apps when passing the Gear VR around a party for friends to check out. It's incredible just sitting in place and following along with your gaze as sea life or entire planets fly by in sharp, well-rendered, 360-degree glory."
