Ubisoft has teamed up with the European and North American Electronic Sports Leagues to deliver the free-to-play game's first worldwide competition.
Those wishing to participate in the first of a series of planned competitions will have until Sunday September 15 to do so, with the competition set to kick off at 2pm UK time on the day.

At the end of the series, the four teams who earn the most points will qualify for the continental Final Playoffs (US and EU).
Players will also receive access to new tier 8 weapons when Ghost Recon Online's 0.12.4 update releases on September 12. Representing the first set of completely new weapons released since the game entered open beta, the likes of the Nemesis 50 sniper rifle and SPAS-12 semi-auto shotgun will provide players with new endgame content, Ubisoft says.
The publisher has also announced plans to establish a new player and developer committee called the ATHENA Council. While everyone can apply to be a member, a handful will be chosen to open a regular dialogue with the game's developers in order to contribute community feedback.

A slew of negatives plague video games -- Peter Pan Syndrome, hyper-violence, camping -- but their youthfulness could do just what Nintendo's Brain Age promised: improve elderly brain function. Over four years, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco had a group play a custom game (video of it in action is after the break) that tasks players to drive and identify road signs that appear while ignoring certain others, according to the New York Times. It's not quite Grand Theft Auto, but it proved how hard successfully multitasking becomes with age. However, after training with the game, the 60 to 80 year old test subjects stomped those a fraction of their age who had no prior exposure to it. What's more, this experience produced brain functionality benefits outside of the game.
This isn't a fluke, either. For proof, the scientists used electroencephalography to monitor the older subjects and found that while playing, the theta wave activity -- associated with attention -- in their prefrontal cortexes looked like that of a younger adult's. These findings may help scientists understand what areas of the brain "could and should" be manipulated to improve cognitive functions like memory. The study appears in today's edition of Nature and backs up similar research from May that also used a concentration-heavy game, and reported like results. Now if you'll pardon us, we have to show our parents that all those hours of our childhood weren't wasted.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure tops chart, but Capcom's shooter sells just 27k in debut week
Lost Planet 3 had a poor debut week in Japan, selling just 27,000 copies to enter the charts in fourth place.
The third game in Capcom's ailing action franchise alsofailed to perform in the UK, though the Japanese publisher may have expected a stronger showing in its native market. Lost Planet 3 was topped by three new releases, most notably JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle, which hit the top spot after selling 425,000 units.
In the hardware chart, both the 3DS XL and the PlayStation 3 saw a distinct improvement over the previous week's sales, though the 3DS XL remained the best-selling platform by a wide margin.
The software chart is below, with lifetime sales in parentheses:
- 1. [PS3] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle (Namco Bandai, 08/29/13) - 425,718 (New)
- 2. [PS3] Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Square Enix, 08/27/13) - 184,018(New)
- 3. [PSV] Ragnarok Odyssey Ace (GungHo Online Entertainment, 08/29/13) - 31,622 (New)
- 4. [PS3] Lost Planet 3 (Capcom, 08/29/13) - 27,503 (New)

After E3, the picture couldn’t be clearer. PS4 is your next console, we declared, but several months and Microsoft u-turns later, the next gen console race looks very different.Yesterday, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox One will launch in 13 key territories on November 22. Now we can look to November’s face off with a far more detailed view of the contenders, their strengths, weaknesses and how each platform holder sees the next generation.Firstly, let’s not read too much into those dates. PS4 will arrive before Xbox One in the US and Xbox One will debut first in Europe, but both will likely be sold out by then anyway. It’s difficult to imagine anyone basing their purchasing decision on something as arbitrary as which one comes out a few days before the other – they are each expensive pieces of technology and the proliferation of cross-gen games have blurred the line between the existing boxes and the successors. Greater competition from PC and mobile, plus broader problems with the economy mean that this generational shift will be slower than any we’ve encountered before.Hardcore players will be the ones with a new Xbox or PlayStation underneath their televisions this Christmas, and these early adopters will likely have made their decision long before the end of November – and many will simply be buying the new version of the console they have already.“This console transition differs from previous generations due to the fact that users are now far more connected and engaged with their Microsoft and Sony consoles,” says director and head of games at analyst IHS Piers Harding-Rolls. “That suggests that there will be less consumers sitting on the fence ready to change allegiance this time round.”

September 5th, 2013, 16:01 Posted By: wraggster
13 per cent of parents are happy to let their kids use a device on holiday as much as they want.
15 per cent of parents said that their children – aged 18 and under – used a device for three or more hours every day whilst on holiday, reveals a YouGov survey from Villa Plus.
22 per cent say their kids use a tablet, 27 per cent a games console and 35 per cent admit that their kids are glued to their smartphones.
Some parents were even happy to allow their kids unlimited use of a device during a family excursion – and not even for Facebooking and chatting to friends, as 63 per cent said that the devices are used to keep them entertained!
We can hear the grunts and moans of ‘back in my day, we appreciated culture, we weren’t such philistines’ – but put a device in our hands and more often than not, we find ourselves missing that fantastic view to get the high score on Candy Crush.
90 per cent of Brits as a whole use a phone around four hours a day whilst on holiday. So who can blame the kids?
Simon Lifford, head of sales and UK operations at Villa Plus, said: “For some families, discouraging children from using games consoles, smartphones and the like too often is an important concern while on holiday, and I can see why families who have spent any amount on getting away may be disappointed that their children wish to do so.”
A device is used for many things during everyday life, whether on holiday or not. So possibly a little encouragement to either use a device sparingly or even better, for beneficial purposes while away such as taking pictures, or even – god forbid - going down an educational route?
Failing that, turn the damn thing off!

Wearable tech to get its own marketplace for apps and games
Google Glass will be getting its own app store next year, the web firm has confirmed.
The company has told The New York Times a special marketplace for the wearable tech, which uses an optical head mounted display, can be expected during 2014, with a set of guidelines for designing applications already drawn up.
A marketplace for the device was also confirmed by Marketing Land, but the firm did not state whether apps for Glass would be placed on Google Play and if developers could charge for them.
Examples of applications that have been developed to date include a cooking application that displays a recipe in front of your eyes and Glass Genie, which acts as a to-do list displaying notes.
One game also coming to Google Glass is Psyclops by developer Sean McCracken, which has been described as a 3D space invaders.

The most striking difference you'll notice in the just <s>leaked</s> announced new Kindle Paperwhite isn't something on the device's screen -- it's on the backplate. AMAZON. That brand, once so subtly tied into the company's game-changing e-reader, is now big, bold and garishly displayed in gloss across the upper part of the Paperwhite's posterior. Why? Well, the answer is quite simple really: compared to the Kindle brand, Amazon's brand equity is much stronger in overseas markets. If you're a longtime Kindle user like me, you'll probably find this design tweak annoying, but that's about all it is. The rest of this new Paperwhite is a matter of finessing the tried-and-true Kindle experience, not disrupting it.

September 4th, 2013, 00:13 Posted By: wraggster
UK gamers have finally got their own next-gen game trade-in program.
Retailer GAME is offering a guaranteed £40 trade-in value for a range of PS3 and Xbox 360 titles when gamers hand them over in order to upgrade to either the PS4 or Xbox One version.
The titles confirmed so far are FIFA 14, Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Details remain scarce, however. For instance, it’s not clear whether consumers can trade-in cross-platform – meaning could they get the same store credit when swapping Xbox 360 for PS4, for instance.
And while the relevant games are priced £49.99 online, there’s no clarification of how much they could cost in-store.
GameStop last month revealed a similar trade-in offer in the US. Sony has also revealed a digital upgrade program that will offer discounts.

After a year's wait, DICE+ is finally shipping its Bluetooth game die. The chance cube is available for $40 in the US, and €40 ($53) in many other parts of the world. While the selection of compatible Android and iPad games is limited to a handful of party and strategy titles, the developer kit should lead to more releases in the future. If you're eager to modernize your board game experience, you can buy the digital dice from DICE+ itself through the source link.

Deep Silver’s Saints Row IV has seen off plenty of opposition to remain this week’s UKIE GfK Chart-Track All Formats Top 40 No.1.
Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist hangs on to second, too, although last week’s No.3 – Disney Infinity – is knocked down one place by Square Enix MMO Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn which makes an impressive third place debut.
The original Final Fantasy XIV debuted at No.10 in September 2010.
Ubisoft’s Rayman Legends makes a No.6 chart arrival ahead of EA’s Madden NFL 25 in seventh.
Last week’s two other high profile new releases fare less well, with Capcom’s Lost Planet 3 managing 26th and Deep Silver’s Killer is Dead 28th.
Here’s the UK Top 20 in full for the week ending August 31st:
1. Saints Row IV (Deep Silver)
2. Splinter Cell: Blacklist (Ubisoft)
3. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Square Enix)
4. Disney Infinity (Disney)
5. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (Microsoft)
6. Rayman Legends (Ubisoft)
7. Madden NFL 25 (EA)
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (Activision)
9. Payday 2 (505 Games)

The UK bosses of Xbox and PlayStation have both claimed that their brands and hardware are in the driving seat as we head toward the incredibly exciting upcoming Q4.
Xbox fought back during Gamescom having finally nailed down its Xbox One message, and announced a FIFA 14 giveaway in a bid to boost pre-orders.
Yet Sony insists the momentum remains with PlayStation 4, as both platform holders gear up for a November showdown.
“Any metric that you care to look at, we have it,” said SCEE boss Jim Ryan. “Whether it is the pre-order number, or what the consumers are saying to us. We are not going to be complacent or arrogant about this – we have not sold a single one yet. However, we are in good shape.”
But Xbox Euro boss Chris Lewis insists it is Microsoft that’s in the enviable position, and that the battle between the firms is good for games.
“Good, strong, healthy competition creates so much more of a vibrant environment,” he said. “It pushes the quality bar up for everything – your marketing, the approach to your consumers, the games themselves. And that’s great for retail.
“This Christmas we will be locking horns with PlayStation, of course we will, you’d expect that, but I think the ultimate beneficiary of that will be the consumer. It is a great time. That said, I wouldn’t trade places with anyone. We are in an enviable position.”
