The battle between Call of Duty and Battlefield for supremacy in the shooter market is a healthy thing for the industry, and one EA hopes to win later this year when the latest entries in each series go head-to-head.
Asked if Battlefield 4 can outsell Call of Duty: Ghosts, EA Labels bossFrank Gibeau told CVG: "Look, we are absolutely going for it. It's a competition and we feel really good about Battlefield 4, and we have an old saying at EA which is 'transition is our friend', and we're going to try to lap them with new technology, new innovation and new capabilities. So do I think we're going to do better than last time? Absolutely.

"Something I learned from the EA Sports business - with regards to FIFA versus Pro Evolution and Madden versus 2K - these fights are good for the industry. They're good for customers. Competition drives innovation, and from our perspective some people s****** at these two companies going head-to-head but actually it's good for our industry, it's good for customers and it's good for our dev team."
EA's Medal of Honor series has been taken out of rotation, but Gibeau told us other franchises will step up to take on Call of Duty in non-Battlefield years.
"The shooter rotation we think about now is Battlefield, Titanfall and Battlefront, and so we like those three brands going forward," he said. "We're working out how we're going to line that up because that's what you'll see from us. With regards to Medal of Honor, you try things in entertainment and if they don't work you try something else. From our perspective, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield Premium continues to grow."

On the heels of a Cast SDK update that borked third-party streaming apps, Google released a version of its Chromecast software for iOS devices. That's right, folks with an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch can use the free application to set up Chromecast on their flat's WiFi network and to manage settings. Of course, YouTube, Netflix, Google Play purchases and Chrome can all be displayed on properly outfitted TVs easily. Video games are expected to generate more revenue than both video and music combined this year.
That’s according to the Entertainment Retailers Association, which predicts that Xbox One, PS4 and a slew of triple-A games – including GTA V, FIFA, Battlefield and Call of Duty – will drive more people into stores than any other entertainment product.
It will also mark a return to form for the medium.
“Games were bigger than music and video in 2010 and 2011, but slipped behind video in 2012,” an ERA spokesperson told MCV. “That’s according to our figures, which include digital games revenues.
“If you add in anticipated hardware sales in the fourth quarter of 2013, we would expect the games total to be bigger than video and music combined, with the cash value of those sales to be worth in excess of £1bn pounds.”
ERA also believes the excitement around games can be a boost to music and film, too.
“The fortunes of music and video are likely to be determined by the strength of their release schedules,” the spokesperson said. “They could even benefit from increased footfall in entertainment stores due to people coming in to buy games and hardware.”

You may be familiar with the story that a ChromeCast update disabled the playback of local content, but Google has confirmed that it will allow every kind of content. Google Statement: 'We're excited to bring more content to Chromecast and would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content. It's still early days for the Google Cast SDK, which we just released in developer preview for early development and testing only. We expect that the SDK will continue to change before we launch out of developer preview, and want to provide a great experience for users and developers before making the SDK and additional apps more broadly available.' So no need to fear!"

The Associated Press reports that 'U.S. forces are now ready to act on any order by President Barack Obama to strike Syria, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Tuesday. The U.S. Navy has four destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea positioned within range of targets inside Syria, as well as U.S. warplanes in the region, Hagel said in an interview with BBC television during his visit to the southeast Asian nation of Brunei. Hagel also predicted that U.S. intelligence agencies would soon conclude that last week's deadly attack on civilians in a Damascus suburb was a chemical attack by Bashar Assad's government.'"The New York Times has an informative map of the sites of the chemical attacks.

Peter Moore sounds off on the importance of F2P and why it no longer delivers offline experiences
Publisher Electronic Arts is working on implementing some form of free-to-play into all of its major franchises moving forward, says Peter Moore.
Speaking to Engadget, the EA COO said the business model had become part and parcel of its leading IP, and pointed to its use in FIFA and Battlefield.
He explained it was very important to the company to widen its consumer base, and F2P allowed EA to do that regardless of how much money a potential player has, what device they’re using and how much time they have to spare.
“FIFA and Battlefield both have free-to-play options, depending on where you are in the world, depending on what platform, and it’s a different experience,” said Moore.
“But the ability for you to be able to interact with those franchises on a free-to-play basis is going to be part and parcel of every major franchise we do now. And that’s very important for Electronic Arts to be able to bring more consumers into our world. FIFA and Battlefield are the two that point out what we can do on a 24 hour basis, regardless of how much money you got in your wallet, how much time you have to spend, what device you’re playing on, where you are in the world.”

The convoy carrying UN chemical weapons inspectors to the sites was targeted by snipers
Diplomatic pressure on Syria has failed and the UK is considering its response to a suspected chemical attack, Foreign Secretary William Hague says.
He told the BBC it would be possible for the UK and its allies to respond without the UN's unanimous backing.
In Syria, UN inspectors visited the site of the suspected attack after their convoy was shot at by snipers.
The PM is cutting his holiday short and is expected to hold a National Security Council meeting on Wednesday.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has also cancelled a visit to Afghanistan to meet British troops.
Downing Street said a decision on whether to recall Parliament would be made on Tuesday.
The suspected chemical attack took place on Wednesday near the Syrian capital Damascus, and reportedly killed more than 300 people.
Weapons inspectors carried out tests at the scene on Monday after unidentified snipers shot at one of their vehicles, a UN spokesman said.
<!-- Embedding the audio player --><!-- This is the embedded player component --><!-- wwrights check --><!-- Empty country is used on test environment -->
<!-- end of the embedded player component --><!-- Player embedded -->Mr Hague told BBC Radio 4's Today programme while he could not go into options or a timetable for action, he was not "going to rule anything in or out".
"We, the United States, many other countries including France, are clear that we can't allow the idea in the 21st century that chemical weapons can be used with impunity," he said.
A Downing Street spokesman said Prime Minister David Cameron had called Russia's President Vladimir Putin on Monday afternoon to discuss Syria and that they had reiterated the position that the use of chemical weapons should merit a "serious response" from the international community.
But while Mr Cameron "made clear there was little doubt" the attack was carried out by the Syrian regime, Mr Putin "said they did not have evidence of whether a chemical weapons attack had taken place or who was responsible," the spokesman said.
MPs are due to return to the Commons on 2 September but there have been demands for Parliament to be recalled.
<!-- pullout-body-->Whitehall officials say no firm decision is likely to be taken on how Britain will respond to last week's alleged chemical attack in Syria until at least Wednesday. That is when David Cameron will be chairing a session of the National Security Council, attended by military and intelligence chiefs and senior ministers. It follows intense consultations between London and Washington with Downing Street keen to stress the two countries are acting in concert.
Any military response, if it's decided on, is most likely to be confined to a one-off or limited guided missile strikes on selected Syrian military targets using Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from US Navy warships stationed hundreds of miles away in the eastern Mediterranean. US vessels there are reported to have about 400 such missiles onboard, while a Royal Navy submarine in the region can also carry cruise missiles.
But Russia, Syria and Iran have all issued strong warnings against any western military action.
<!-- pullout-links-->
Labour's shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander said he would "expect the prime minister to make his case to Parliament" before a decision was made about UK involvement.
The prime minister also had phone calls with other leaders, including US President Barack Obama, this weekend, where they agreed on the need to take "strong action".
He will return several days early from his holiday in Cornwall with his family so he can chair Wednesday's high-level security briefing of senior ministers and defence and intelligence chiefs.
It is understood the most likely military response would be a one-off or limited guided missile strikes on Syrian military targets fired from US Navy warships, says BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner.
Prof Michael Clarke, of the Royal United Services Institute, said: "Military advice to politicians in the US and the UK is 'don't think you can dabble in this - you have to go in with both feet'".
