If you’re in possession of a Raspberry Pi, you may want to check out the new Chromium support for your tiny pocketable computer. With its terrifically minimal hardware requirements, the Chromium OS seems like just the thing for this $35 computer.
The new Raspberry Pi supported Chromium build comes from the fruitful desktop of [Hexxeh], a.k.a. [Liam McLaughlin]. In the world of Chromium devs, [Hexxeh] has already made a name for himself by getting Chromium working on a Macbook Air, putting it in a VirtualBox, and generally being the resident wizard of the Chromium project
The Chromium OS should provide a much faster computing experience for the Raspi compared to the current Debian and Arch Linux-based builds. Right now, the Chromium support for the Raspberry Pi is very much a work in progress but a slimmed-down, browser-only operating system may be just what the underpowered but useful 700 MHz ARM computer with 256 MB of RAM needs.

[Remy] has access to a very nice Fluke thermal camera, so when his Raspberry pi came in he pointed the thermal camera at the Raspi (Spanish, Google translation) to see how far this neat computer could be pushed before it overheated.
There are three main sources of heat on the Raspberry Pi: the voltage regulator, theUSB/Ethernet controller and the Broadcom SoC. At idle, these parts read 49.9° C, 48.7° C and 53° C, respectively; a little hot to the touch, but still well within the temperature ranges given in the datasheets for these components.
The real test came via a stress test where the ARM CPU was at 100% utilization. The Broadcom SoC reached almost 65° C while the Ethernet controller and regulator managed to reach the mid-50s. Keeping in mind this test was performed at room temperature, we’d probably throw a heat sink on a Raspberry Pi if it’s going to be installed in an extreme environment such as a greenhouse or serving as a Floridian or Texan carputer.
Thanks [Alberto] for sending this in.

More than 30 potential games have raised more than $100k through crowd-funding site
A total of 699 games projects have been successfully bankrolled by creative funding project Kickstarter.
The site allows creative types to pitch ideas to the public who are then able to make a monetary donation.
Of these, three potential games have raised in excess of $1m. 31 have raised between $100k and $999,999 and 120 have raised over $20k. The largest number – 351 – successfully raised between $1k and $9,999.

ShopTo.net has released the results of a survey claiming the average UK gamer spent £334 last year on their hobby.
The survey was conducted via e-mail between the 15th and 17th of June 2012, recieved just over 9,000 responses, with a sampling error of plus or minus seven percent.
ShopTo.net found that 35 percent of gamers were spending more time playing smart phone games than on their consoles.
On average, those surveyed purchased sixteen games in the past year.
The majority of respondents owned four gaming devices, and over eighty percent owned a PC, smartphone, and two consoles.
“Gamers are changing their gaming device of choice with more getting their casual gaming fix from Android and iOS devices,” said Igor Cipolletta, Founder and CEO of ShopTo.
“Interestingly, we are seeing game sales on the Nintendo consoles losing out as the casual games market on portable devices continues to grow.”
Nintendo has been particularly hard hit by the mobile trend, and the survey found that although 65 percent owned a Wii, only four percent of Wii owners had bought a game for the console in the past year.
This may change with the release of the Wii U and other next generation consoles.
“The fact is consumers have more gaming devices than ever before, with thousands of games being published every week and this, coupled with the lack of new hardware from Sony or Microsoft, is seeing consumers move to mobile devices as their platform of choice,” said Cipolletta.
“We believe this trend will reverse when the next generation of consoles are released beginning with the Wii U this Christmas.”

Hexxeh has already proven his love for Chromium OS and the Raspberry Pi, obviously the next step was for the hacker to combine his passions into one project. Thus was born Chromium OS for the tiny ARM-powered computer from the UK. The initial commit of the port was officially approved by the Chromium team, meaning that anyone lucky enough to get their mitts on the board can download the code themselves. Of course, there's a long road to hoe before we see a stable version -- if we ever see such a thing. Right now the OS does little more than boot up, but if the embedded version of Chromium can be made to function without issue it could make browsing the web on the Broadcom SOC-sporting PC much less painful. Then again, performance is a big question mark. Seeing how much the 700MHz ARM11 chip struggled with the Midori browser, we wouldn't hold our breath for miracles. Then again, the underlying system is far less demanding than a full fledged Linux distro with a desktop. Hit up the source link to download Chromium OS for the Raspberry Pi yourself.

Woke up to a buggy Datel wireless controller? Don't worry, you didn't overdo that Street Fighter session last night. A June 20th Xbox update has caused issues with some of the company's controllers including the TurboFire 2 and Wildfire 2. Microsoft's support site claimed the controller maker had posted a fix, although currently there's only a note saying that a patch is "still being tested." It also advises to check regularly, so feel free to click the source links below as often as you want for more info.

Being a $35, full-fledged Linux computer, the Raspberry Pi brings a lot to the table. There’s one problem, though: this computer doesn’t come with a keyboard, mouse, display, or even a battery. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to add these devices with the help of a Motorola LapDock and turn a RasPi into a fully portable computing platform.
The Motorola LapDock is the latest take on the dumb terminal. Consisting of only a 1366 x 768 display, keyboard, touch pad and 38Wh battery, the LapDock is meant to serve as a docking station and breakout for a few select Motorola cell phones. There are only two connections on the LapDock – a micro USB and micro HDMI port – connecting the peripherals to the cell phone. With just a few adapters, it’s possible to plug the Raspi into the LapDock, and have a Raspberry Pi-based laptop for under $100.
Interestingly, the Raspi can also be powered over the USB connection to the LapDock, meaning an external power supply isn’t required. Right now the state of a LapDock-ified Raspi is a bit inelegant, but we’ll expect someone to come up with a proper docking adapter to get rid of all the wires and add a WiFi module shortly.

Cloud gaming company execs looking to sell amidst rumours of potential Sony acquisition
The owners of cloud gaming firm Gaikai are seeking to sell the company for a fee in excess of $500 million, according to a report.
Earlier this month Sony were said to be close to agreeing a buyout of the game streaming company, whilst it is also though the deal could bring backwards-compatibility to the PS3.
CNN Money has now confirmed that Gaikai is looking for a buyer, although no company was mentioned as being in talks.
Any potential deal could face problems with numerous CV firms such as Benchmark Capital, Rustin Canyon Partners and Intel Capital holding equity in the company having invested in the company.
Gaikai has declined to comment on the matter.

Epic games design director points to drawbacks of accessibility
The current generation of games has focused its attention on widening their appeal at the expense of challenge and freedom, says Cliff Blezinski.
Speaking to X360A, Epic's games design director highligted the dangers of this attitude, and expressed his hopes to avoid these pitfalls in the upcoming Gears of War prequel.
“It feels like in this current console generation that we’ve taken a lot of steps to grow the audience and what I think’s happened is that the games have become more linear and easier, so it feels like a lot of quick-time-events,” said Bleszinski.
“The more I play games like that the more I turned off to them and just want to get back to systems interacting with systems, and get back to a game that, you know, when was the last time a game really challenged you and asked something of you, right? There’s a reason why Demon Souls and Dark Souls have taken off lately. It’s because they really require you actually try.”
Blezinski's comments come as the industry revs its engines for a run at poll position in the social and casual markets.

Not happy with enshrining the previously unknown concept of ‘three strikes’ in to French law, the French anti-piracy agency Hadopi has announced a scheme to indoctrinate children against file sharing.
According to Torrent Freak, the agency plans to open a stand at the Kidexpo in Paris where it will broadcast its anti-file sharing message directly to 150,000 children.
In an email leaked to French media, Hadopi stated that it “plans to propose a stand dedicated to raising awareness of copyright in the creative arts and cultural content platforms on the internet, in partnership with professionals.”

PriceWaterhouseCoopers, administrator for GAME, has today announced that 16 stores are set to close today, with all stores closing soon.
Kate Warwick, administrator at PwC, said: "In the interests of creditors, the 31 remaining GAME stores are to be closed over the coming weeks and a final closing down sale has commenced with discounts of up to 60 percent available in-store and online."
“This is a difficult time for employees and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily. Despite exploring available opportunities for continued trading, the ongoing trading performance and absence of viable offers for the purchase of the business has resulted in these closures."
The second creditor's meeting of GAME is commencing at this moment, and further details should be available in 2-3 hours.
Warwick added: "PwC has been in touch with the Federal Government Department that deals with General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme (GEERS) and will assist the employees with their applications. "
For a full run down of all events leading up to this point, check the dedicated GAME tab on MCV Pacific.
Our thoughts are with the remaining GAME Staff.

In addition to being a serviceable single board computer, the Raspberry Pi also has a header full of GPIO pins at your beck and call. [Tedbot] sent in a great tutorial on using these pins with Python, Bash, and C.
The GPIO pins on the Raspi are arranged in a 2×13 header. Until Sparkfun manages to manufacture a decent Raspi protoboard, the easiest way to break these pins out is with an old IDE ribbon cable. After plugging the other end into a breadboard, [Tedbot] had an easily accessible set of Raspi pins.
To control these pins, [Tedbot] found two libraries: the first is WiringPi that implements a C-style, Arduino-like programming environment on the Raspi. The second is theRPi.GPIO Python package. Since the Raspi runs Linux, and everything in Unix is a file, [Tedbot] used a shell script to blink a LED.
One word of warning if you’re building a board to extend the capabilities of the Raspi: these pins aren’t 5 V tolerant, so you’ll need to throw in a buffer or level converter when building a Raspi circuit.
Edit: Adafruit is releasing a Pi Plate prototyping board in a few weeks. Neat, huh?

The site says it couldn't get direct feedback from Sony on the show, but the show's organisers at Koelnmesse were happy to confirm that they're expecting the platform holder.
"Yeah Sony is coming, even though there was a strange article that question marked it a week ago... but they are coming for sure!"
Nintendo and Microsoft have decided to skip the show this year. "This year, Xbox will be focusing on smaller, more localized promotions and experiences for press, partners, retailers and customers around the world," Microsoft said in a statement.

Surprising no one based on initial sale numbers provided by Activision Blizzard, Diablo 3 managed to best all comers to establish dominance in the month of May. Blizzard's latest is the first time a PC-only title has graced the top spot on NPD's "new physical retail only" list since July 2010, when StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty launched.
Hardware sales are down compared to May 2011. Every console save for the 3DS – which saw a 17% spike in sales compared to last year – saw a decline year-over-year. Hardware saw a 39% drop, bringing in $138.9 million compared to $228.8 million in 2011. According to Microsoft, the Xbox 360 "remains the top-selling console of 2012," with 160,000 units sold.
Software sales of new physical media (see: discs you cram into your GameBox) saw less of a drop, and are down 16%, accounting for $335.2 million in sales for the month of May. This is mainly attributed to less software launches this year compared to 2011, though the performance of Diablo 3 definitely helped to soften that blow. Also, for the first time, all of this sales data includes Walmart now.
Hit the break for the full list of May's top software titles, which include a few surprises. For one, Modern Warfare 3 is not in the top three. How's that for a surprise?

For those of us who haven’t received their Raspberry Pis yet, it may come as a bit of a shock to realize the RasPi doesn’t have an on board WiFi adapter. While the Model B RasPi has an RJ45 Ethernet plug, but the Model A must rely on USB-bound networking dongles. [Mike] over at Mitch Tech put up a great guide to using a Realtek WiFi dongle with his Raspberry Pi.
Stock, the standard Debian install recommended by the folks at Raspberry Pi has the drivers for the Realtek WiFi adapter, but no firmware. [Mike] goes over how to get the firmware for this series of WiFi adapters to keep the kernel from complaining. Interestingly, [Mike]‘s instructions also work for a slew of Realtek-based wireless dongles, so the installation instructions should work for a bunch of adapters available from DealExtreme or eBay.
[Mike] also has a guide for installing Quake 3 on a RasPi. Combine these two builds and you’ve got the perfect setup for a Raspberry Pi LAN party. Anyone want to host?

Recent psychiatric testimony in the trial of Anders Breivik, the 33-year-old Norwegian man who admits to perpetrating a pair of grisly 2011 terrorist attacks in Oslo that resulted in the deaths of 77 people, has shifted the court’s attention once again to the defendant’s gaming habits.
Breivik has previously discussed using Call Of Duty as a rehearsal sandbox for his attack plans. The most recent round of expert testimony concerns the year-long sabbatical Breivik took between the summers of 2006 and 2007, which he spent playing World Of Warcraft full-time, or roughly 16 hours a day, from a room in his Mother’s Oslo flat.
In response to Judge Elizabeth Arntzen inquiry whether interviews with one of Breivik’s acquaintances in WOW supported their view of a personal breakdown, psychiatrist Synne Sørheim responded: “We feel that playing a lot of computer games gives the impression of a working cognitive function. It is however, something completely different to relate to something in real life, have committed relationships to other people, arrange meetings, go to work in the morning, have a healthy relationship with a girlfriend, or having common social skills.”
When the judge asked whether Breivik’s behaviour during this period might be described as gaming addiction, Sørheim tooks the opportunity to say what she really thinks: “I would still like to point out that sitting alone in your room and playing games, no matter what the scope of the matter, call it addiction or whatnot, is not normal for a man in his 20's.”
While it’s not surprising to hear that many older individuals continue to cling to the stereotype of videogames being an aberrant interest, it should be noted that Sørheim admitted to the judge moments earlier, “We have no form of expertise when it comes to computer games.”
Back in April close to the start of the trial, Breivik defended his immersion in WOW. "Some people like to play golf, some like to sail, I played WOW. It had nothing to do with 22 July. It's not a world you are engulfed by. It's simply a hobby. WOW is only a fantasy game, which is not violent at all. It's just fantasy. It's a strategy game. You co-operate with a lot of others to overcome challenges. That's why you do it. It's a very social game. Half of the time you are connected in communication with others. It would be wrong to consider it an antisocial game."
In a trial such as this where an apparently sane individual has so remorselessly taken innocent human life, the quest to find a root for the dysfunction is going to touch on some familiar scapegoats. Many will recall the shooting rampage at Columbine high school, which was blamed on the two teenaged perpetrators’ love of firstperson shooters such as Doom. It will always be natural for psychiatrists to blame the thing they don’t understand.
Anders Breivik will be sentenced on 20 July or 24 August.
