[Tech2077] is one of the lucky ones who already got his hands on a Raspberry Pi. He’s been looking into different interface options with the GPIO header and just posted a guide to using an HD44780 character display with the RPi. We like this approach because instead of doing some hard-core LCD work he’s using prototyping equipment you probably already have on hand.
Getting a character LCD running should be really simple. The gotcha is the logic level gap between the devices. If you’ve been working with Arduino, your add-ons are probably meant for a 5V power rail and logic levels. The RPi outputs 3.3V logic. You could use a level converter (you’d need at least 7 pins to be converted in this case) or you can be a bit more clever. [Tech2077] grabbed an I2C port expander that uses just 2 of the RPi lines to address even lines of the display (four data bits plus three control bits). This is a bit of a hack, as the 3.3V logic is 0.2V below the recommended minimum for a digital 1 on the port expander. But it seems to work just fine! If it didn’t, a couple of NPN transistors would do the trick as well.
Addressing the new peripheral is just a matter of loading the i2c module and writing some Python.

Games Britannia: Replayed, described by its organisers as "part cultural festival, part gaming expo, part art exhibition and part educational conference," will open its doors to the public on July 7 and 8.
Taking place at the MAGNA Science Adventure Centre in Sheffield, the event will play host to a celebration of the British game industry's past 40 years, showcasing the most groundbreaking PC, arcade and console games in each genre from the period.
The display will be supported by keynote speeches and workshops form the UK industry's key players, including GoldenEye producer Martin Hollis and Football Manager creator Kevin Toms (who will be joined by Sports Interactive's Miles Jacobson).
It's not all about the UK, however, as the event will see a number of publishers - including the likes of Namco and Nintendo - showing their games. Ni No Kuni and Tales Of Graces F will make their UK debuts, too.
For more information on the show, and to buy tickets, head over tothe official website.

After last week's massive bump in Japanese Vita sales, Sony's system has dropped back down to the level it was at two weeks ago - around 13K.Nintendo is still going strong with Japanese 3DS sales quadrupling those of runner-up, PlayStation 3. While some of this can be attributed to Pokémon Black & White coming out this week, the sales increase on the handheld was pretty mild - presumably because potential buyers already own the system.Proportionally, Pokémon had a much larger impact on the aging DSi that sold more than double what it did last week. Granted an extra 520 units is little more than a drop in the bucket for the whole country. Here's the full hardware chart, as reported by Andriasang: - 3DS: 68,056 (Last week: 61,793)
- PlayStation 3: 15,680 (14,673)
- Vita: 13,589 (34,459)
- PSP: 8954 (9740)
- Wii: 6127 (5963)
- Xbox 360: 1073 (1084)
- PlayStation 2: 1065 (1237)
- DSi: 900 (380)
- DSi XL: 704 (689)
As reported earlier this week, Pokémon Black & White 2 is selling like hotcakes with over one and a half million copies moved in its first week. That's still not as well as its predecessor which managed a whopping 2,637,285 sales in a scant two days upon its release in 2010.Meanwhile, From Software's Kinect curio Steel Battalion launched with a thud, coming in at 14th place with under 5000 units sold. Of course, Xbox 360 isn't very popular in Japan and a game that requires a niche peripheral for it was never a promising prospect, even with Capcom's strong marketing push.Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D is holding steady at second place with a mild decline from last week's 66,434, while Persona 4: The Golden sold less than a fifth of what it did in our last report, yet still maintains a spot in the top three. - Pokémon Black & White 2 (Pokemon Co., DS): 1,561,738 - NEW
- Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D (Square Enix, 3DS): 58,228 (Life to date: 721,174)
- Persona 4: The Golden (Atlus, Vita): 29,293 (166,369)
- Kenka Bancho Bros. Tokyo Battle Royal (Spike Chunsoft, PSP): 21,797 - NEW
- Tokyo Jungle (Sony, PS3): 18,715 (165,013)
- K-On After School Live!! HD Version (Sega, PS3): 13,581 - NEW
- Mario Party 9 (Nintendo, Wii): 13,339 (447,126)
- Mario Tennis Open (Nintendo, 3DS): 13,036 (198,047)
- Dragon's Dogma (Capcom, PS3): 9162 (446,410)
- Lollipop Chainsaw (Kadokawa, PS3): 7898 (61,246)
- Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 3DS): 7609 (1,631,358)
- Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 3DS): 5091 (1,746,836)
- Akiba's Trip Plus (Acquire, PS3): 5034 (34,539)
- Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor (Capcom, Xbox 360): 4889 - NEW
- Arcana Famiglia: Vascello Phantasma no Majutsushi (Comfort, PSP): 4854 - NEW
- Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii): 4287 (965,713)
- Monster Hunter 3G (Capcom, 3DS): 4269 (1,481,643)
- Fire Emblem: Awakening (Nintendo, 3DS): 3972 (417,760)
- Gundam Seed Battle Destiny (Namco Bandai, Vita): 3668 (52,790)

[Michael Dornisch] was surprised to find that the main processor of the Raspberry Pi reaches about 56 degrees Celsius (about 133 degrees F) while streaming video over the network. He thought it might help the longevity of the device if he was able to cool things off a bit. But why stop with just the processor? He added heat sinks to the SoC, Ethernet/USB chip, and voltage regulator.
From his parts bin he grabbed a small heat sink that was probably used on a graphics card. After measuring the three chips with his digital calipers he cut out the footprint he needed, resulting in three smaller heat sinks. We didn’t realize that thermal compound has enough gripping power to hold the sinks in place without any mechanical fastener, but apparently it does. [Michael] mentions that it’s possible to use other adhesives, like JB Weld. What’s important is that you use something (ie: thermal compound or a liquid adhesive) to prevent any air gap from coming between the chip surface and the aluminum.
He measured the result as a 17.3 degree C (31 degree F) drop in temperature. We looked around and it seems there’s no internal temperature sensor on the Broadcom chip so these surface readings will have to suffice. Do you think this will prolong the life of the board if it is used regularly to play back high quality video? We already know that these temperatures are within the specifications for the hardware.

June 27th, 2012, 23:36 Posted By: wraggster
DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson has hit back at industry "naysayers" proclaiming the death of console gaming in the face of a growing mobile market.
"People are generally correct that things are changing, and a lot of people in this industry are acknowledging that - some people don't want to see it, though," Troedsson, whose studio produces theBattlefield series, told us. "But I would also say the people who are painting such a grim picture of where we're going are wrong."
In fact, far from damaging it, Troedsson believes wholeheartedly that the broadening of available platforms will benefit the traditional game industry.
"Yes, people are playing more on their mobile devices, but I don't see people playing on other SKUs as a problem for triple-A developers, it's actually the contrary," he said. "I think people engaging in any kind of gaming is good for all games, because it means that people will play more.
"I consider myself to be a hardcore, triple-A kind of player, and I definitely play more on my mobile devices now, but I don't play less on my other devices as a result. When I'm home, I want to play games with the absolute most hi-def, best audio, best visuals that I can get out of a gaming session. And that will come from dedicated hardware or a very high-end PC."
While Troedsson wouldn't be drawn on predicting whether or not the next round of hardware will represent the final home console generation, he believes that powerful hardware accessible in the home will remain a permanent aspect of gaming.
"There will always be a demand for games that require a lot of hardware to deliver a really hi-def experience," he explained. "Whether that will be delivered by CPUs and memory sitting in your room, or somewhere else, I don't know. Probably both. But one thing is for sure, people will continue to want to play the best-looking games out there."
Of course, as the head of a company making big-budget home console games, Troedsson position is unsurprising. His sentiments echo those of Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley, who made similar assertions last year.
And if genuine, the recently leaked next-gen Xbox roadmap - which lays out a ten year plan for Microsoft's next assault on the living room - adds additional weight to the continued rude health of console gaming. Even so, it remains a refreshing point of view given the industry-wide gold rush towards the bright, if not so new, frontiers of mobile and free-to-play - areas DICE is itself already experimenting in.
Speaking at GDC Taipei, which took place over the past two days, Ngmoco boss Ben Cousins became the latest industry veteran to predict the death of consoles in the face of mobile.
"There's a potential for mobile gaming to kill console gaming," he said, according to Gamasutra. "I'm talking about a significant reduction of market share with no chance of return."
"I believe Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo won't produce dedicated hardware past the next generation. Further, I believe traditional game companies like EA will be purchased by existing digital companies, or close entirely."
Cousins' was careful to broaden his definition of mobile, however: "When I'm talking about mobile, I'm talking about the operating system, not the device.
"I believe these operating systems will start to appear in other classes of devices, other than just mobile phones and tablets. In the future I think mobile gaming maybe won't be so mobile, and we may need a new definition for them."

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo won't produce dedicated hardware beyond the next generation', says Ben Cousins
Ngmoco’s Ben Cousins has become the latest high-profile games exec to predict the death of the console.
Gamasutra reports that speaking at GDC Taipei the former EA, Sony and Lionhead, Cousins stated: "There's a potential for mobile gaming to kill console gaming. I'm talking about a significant reduction of market share with no chance of return.
"I believe that sometime during the next console generation, globally, both the revenue and the market share for games will be larger in mobile than it is for console.
“I believe Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo won't produce dedicated hardware past the next generation. Further, I believe traditional game companies like EA will be purchased by existing digital companies, or close entirely."
Cousins believes that the decline seen in other dedicated hardware sectors – such as camcorders, GPS devices and MP3 players – is evidence of his belief. And that consoles will be next.

Every unused car part you have is basically living in your place, rent free. Did you know that? How do we keep letting this junk get away with that?
Well, here's an idea: turn that lazy junk into working video game hardware.Jason Torchinsky did just that, using an old power seat controller from an Oldsmobile to play some Ms. Pac-Man. You can check out the whole how-to over on Jalopnik – or, if you're anything like us, you can just call your dad, tell him to come over and make him do it.

'As Soon as tablets can stream on to TVs, there's no reason to buy a console anymore', says Crytek CEO
The future of consoles will be free-to-play and away from boxed retail, Crytek’s CEO has claimed.
Speaking to CVG, Cevat Yerli said however that console manufacturers were being held back from introducing the payment model on a large scale due to pressure from retailers for boxed products.
“Hardware manufacturers are reliant on distribution and retail businesses, and those companies who are not reliant on third-party retail business such as Apple can go 100% digital,” said Yerli.
“They don't have the problem of retailers saying, 'I will not sell your hardware if you do not give me boxed games too'. That is the culprit of the problem.
“Apple says, 'screw you, if you don't sell my hardware I will sell it anyway in my own stores'. So really the number one issue that needs to be resolved is how companies like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo become independent from retail so that they can go fully digital.”

Rumours are flying around the internet about what Google will announce at this year’s I/O event.
Not to be left behind after the recent announcements from Apple and Microsoft, Google are set to announce something big, but what? Let’s take a look at the most popular rumours on the net.
Jelly Bean
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is rumoured to feature a new search bar and background images. A Siri-esque ‘Google Assistant’ could be making its first appearance in the new OS update.
Nexus 7 tablet
Yesterday PCR reported details about a rumoured leak of the Google Nexus 7 tablet PC. The device is said to have a seven-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 1GB RAM, 1.2MP front-facing camera and a choice of 8GB or 16GB internal storage.
Built by Asus and with a budget price tag, it could be set to rival Amazon’s Kindle Fire. It is also rumoured to feature Jelly Bean.
Project Glass
There has been a lot of talk about Project Glass this year. Google Glasses in particular have proved a hot topic.
Featuring a low-resolution built-in camera, the glasses will be able to monitor the world in real time and relay data back to the user about their surroundings, including information about locations, buildings and nearby friends.
Google I/O runs from June 27-29 in San Francisco, the official live stream of the event is available atdevelopers.google.com/events/io/io-live

The latest Valve-licensed replica from Gaming Heads is a mini model of the Aperture Sentry Turret. The turret is 16 inches tall (including base and antenna) and features a sound module, which will play samples of the turret's "activation, search, auto search, disabled and tipped over sounds."
The company is only making 350 turrets and they'll be "cast in high quality poly-stone," then painted and finished by hand. Pre-orders are available now and the item will ship in Q4 2012 for $324.99.
We'd mock the price, but then we think about the cost of making a real (orrealest yet) Portal Turret with a Penn State education, and now a few hundred dollars doesn't seem so unreasonable.

Accessories, iOS has them. Not many devices can boast the same rich and dazzling array of add-ons that the iPhone or iPad enjoy -- from keyboards to docks, arcade cabinets to battery packs. Today's offering? A mobile mixer. The iRig MIX from IK Multimedia, to be precise. It's essentially a mini DJ tool, designed to work with such iGadgets, and brought to you by the same serial audio-accessorizers behind the iRig MIC Cast and AmpliTube. If you think you've seen this fella before, then you likely have, as this got its first glimpse of sunlight back at CES. Now it's here for real, auditioning for your affections as if it were on "American Idol."
While it's easy to dismiss some of the more ambitious accessories as as trying to push the limits of iPad / iPhone functionality to the extreme, it's also worth remembering that accessory X isn't always about replacing object Y. No one ever bought a USB webcam thinking it'd turn them into Spielberg, now did they? But, they might have gotten one thinking it would give their PC some skills it never had before. So it's with this short, preemptive missive in mind that we turn on the iRig MIX, plug in and rock out. Hopefully.

Euro 2012 may have given FIFA 12 a boost in last week's chart, but not even an international football tournament can keep a raft of superheroes from ascending the charts - even in Lego form.
Traveller's Tales' Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes takes the top spot this week, then, just under a year and a half after its predecessor debuted at number two.
Batman's debut shifts the front runners down a place, with FIFA 12holding on to second spot, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier falling to three and Max Payne 3 resting at four.
Lollipop Chainsaw, meanwhile, falls two places to six, pastBattlefield 3 which digs in and keeps hold of number five.
FIFA Street finds its way back to the top ten and, less explicably, so does Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which climbs from 23 to eight. The disappointing Game Of Thrones leaves the top ten altogether.
01. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Warner Bros)
02. FIFA 12 (EA)
03. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (Ubisoft)
04. Max Payne 3 (Rockstar Games)
05. Battlefield 3 (EA)
06. Lollipop Chainsaw (Warner Bros)
07. Mario & Sonic At The London 2012 Olympic Games (Sega)
08. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda)
09. Sniper Elite V2 (505 Games)
10. FIFA Street (EA)

Public exposure to the videogame industry is at an all-time high in the UK. The government’s recent reform of the National Curriculum will allow students to be taught computer science over the much-maligned ICT; powerful game creation tools like Unity and GameMaker are cheap to try and easy to use, while commercial releases now routinely include extensive level editors; and then there are projects like the $25 PC Raspberry Pi, and high-profile contests such as Epic Games’ Make Something Unreal jam, which concluded at public consumer electronics event The Gadget Show Live.
Over the the next week, we'll be publishing a series of features offering advice on how to get a job in the game industry, links to which you'll find below. We'll continue to add to this page, so keep checking back. You can access all of our past features on starting your career in the game industry by visiting our Get Into Games topic page.

Peter Von Buskirk has been trying to change the way gamers aim at stuff since 2005 with his trackball controller concept, the latest version of which is currently attempting to raise $125,000 on Kickstarter.
The device's core concept of taking a PlayStation-esque controller and replacing the right analog stick with a trackball has remained unchanged over the years. In a previous life, the controller was a PlayStation 2 peripheral known as the Reflex Control, but despite a strong presence at several E3s a 2007 pre-order initiative was unable to secure enough orders for the controller to be put into production.
"I have always speculated that it was due to limited public awareness or a skeptical attitude toward a then-unusual pre-sale site," Von Buskirk told Joystiq. "Maybe if Kickstarter has existed then, it would have succeeded. You never know."
Nowadays, the patent-pending prototype is a PC-only controller. Raised funds will be spent on engineering upgrades, creating a tool required for the controller's molded plastic bits, component acquisition and manufacturing, assembly and shipping costs. Check out the pitch above, as well as a video of the controller being used to play Diablo 3 after the break.

So you've survived the robot revolution and you're waiting for either a full-blown apocalypse, or Mr. Anderson. But how are you going to kill time when our new masters are eating controller PCBs for breakfast? With a steampunk joystick, of course. Jason Torchinsky from Jalopnik has done just that, making an Atari 2600 controller by repurposing a power seat control switch panel from a 1980s Oldsmobile. It's no Avenger Controller Elite, but it certainly does the job, and due to a standardized wiring layout it's functional on other hardware of the same era. And for all you MAME heroes, Jason says it would be no more complicated to hook it up to a PC or Mac using a USB keyboard encoder. Follow the source link for a neat walkthrough of the project and jump over the break to see a video of the seat switch in action, shot in the mancave of yesteryear.

When we first saw the Ringbow finger peripheral, it was a gangly prototype, tethered to an external battery -- not exactly ideal for a portable tablet accessory. The idea is to strap a D-pad to a user's finger, netting them extra control for touch-based games. Now the duo behind the device is showcasing a self-contained unit on Kickstarter, hoping to garner enough interest to send it off to production. TheBluetooth-compatible band boasts an adjustable one-size-fits-all grip, a nine-way directional nub and a five hour battery life. A $45 contribution buys a standard black Ringbow and a game package, though more generous backers can score additional colors, exclusive hardware and dev kits. Without $100,000 in support, however, the ring won't be minted. Follow the links below if you're compelled to fund the digital circlet.
