[Tim Caswell] has been using gamepads and joysticks to demonstrate his node.js hacks for a long time. The thing is, he has been relying on C++ bindings to handle the hardware while trying to herald the praises of node.js. Why not cut out the middle man and write a joystick driver in node.js? It turns out to be so simple anyone can do it.
Granted, this is not a kernel driver. He’s relying on the Linux kernel to recognize the hardware and provide him with the customary /dev/js0 file which he can then work with. As you can see in the snippet above, he’s looping through code in order to constantly read from the hardware. To get this far he dug through the documentation for joystick packets (yay for open source!) to find that each is made of a 32-bit timestamp, a 16-bit value, and two 8-bit numbers identifying the event type and button or axis.
Once he has the packets, it’s off to the races. Each data type is parsed into an appropriate variable which you can use in the logic of your own program. Don’t be nervous, this will make a great weekend project!

The Government is determined to make this country the technology centre of Europe'
George Osborne has hailed the UK's video games legacy - and what that means for Britain's potential as a technology hub.
In official comments issued today supporting the new GREE studio in London, he said that "the Government is determined to make Britain the technology centre of Europe, with the London’s Tech City at its heart."
The British Government has been proactively courting foreign businesses to open new bases in London - and so far has encouraged Amazon, Facebook and YouTube to establish new engineering teams in the capital.
Xbox is also opening a London studio, as is Konami's PES Productions.
The UK games tax breaks scheme announced by Osborne in his April budget will have helped sweeten the deal for some.

Last week saw the lowest games sales on record for UK retailers, who took just £8.4m from software sales.
Whilst the market has been unsteady for a number of weeks now, last week's sales hit rock bottom as just 394,688 games were sold.
These statistics are according to data taken from UKIE/GfK Chart-Track.
It came as no surprise to see Sega's London 2012: Official Video Game become the week's top seller.
Last week's poor showing has largely been attributed to the lack of new releases, which commonly dry up throughout the summer period.
The UK games retail sector has struggled throughout the year, suffering from numerous economic woes and the rise of digital and downloadable content.
Analysts have also highlighted key events such as the Queen's Jubilee, the European Championships and the Olympic Games as having a negative effect on the market, pushing customers away from the high street.

Far Cry 3 lead discusses maturity in upcoming title
Ignoring violence in games can undermine a game’s narrative, the lead designer of Far Cry 3 has said.
Speaking to VG247, Mark Thompson said developers needed to highlight a player’s motivations behind core mechanics to completely immerse a player into the experience.
Referring to the violence in Far Cry 3, the Ubisoft developer said the studio addressed this aspect head on to avoid undermining literary and artistic value from the experience.
“One mistake that games can make is to simply not acknowledge the violence and pretend like it isn’t important,” said Thompson.
“That their protagonist is nonchalantly killing a ton of people. If you ignore what your core mechanics are asking players to do, if you pretend like players aren’t being rewarded for killing, then it will undermine the narrative.

It's time for Kingdom Hearts to go back to home consoles. Square Enix have scrunched four of these games onto tiny handheld screens now – five if you want to count the oddball Chain of Memories. That's five games worth of parsing the shadows of Traverse Town in the glare of the sun while riding the bus. Five games worth of Kingdom Hearts' nausea-inducing camera on those tiny screens.
Enough already. If Final Fantasy Versus XIII is actually dead and buried (whichSquare Enix says it isn't – but whatever), then shift all those internal resources to Kingdom Hearts 3 and be done with it. It's a disservice to the franchise, the source material and the platforms to keep squeezing these games into such ill-fitting confines.
Okay, I've got the light rage out of my system. The sky is not falling. Birth by Sleep and now Dream Drop Distance are perfectly serviceable games. But is the series reaching its potential on those platforms? I don't think it is. Barring some drastic change, Kingdom Hearts is always going to be better-suited for home consoles than handhelds. It's in the franchise's DNA. It's even evident in additions like Dream Drop Distance's new "Flowmotion System," for instance, which sends Sora bouncing off walls and objects, like lamp posts and even enemies. It's not a bad idea and would be a nice addition to a console game. On the 3DS screen though? There's just too much going on.

Oculus Rift to offer stereoscopic 3d experience
A new virtual reality headset for gaming is being taken to Kickstarter in an effort to raise $250,000 in funding for the project.
Created by Oculus, the Rift headset has been designed to produce a stereoscopic 3D experience, and claims to overcome various resolution and latency problems that have previously affected the technology.
As part of the Kickstarter, contributors will receive early development kits that include access to the Oculus Developer Centre, a community for users, and the Oculus Rift SDK that will provide code, samples and documentation.
The headset and SDK will be compatible with PCs and mobile, and the technology can be integrated into new or existing titles.
The company has said it will also be compatible with consoles in future.

The development team behind the tiny computer has announced it is working on a port of Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich for the device.
Whilst already shipping with a Linux based operating system known as Raspbian, the creators of the device have posted pictures online showcasing their progress with the new OS.
Costing just £22, the computer has already made a huge impact on the industry, with many believing it could be the future of computing.
With it's minute size and connectivity, it's a prime example of plug-and-play technology.
Designed for use within schools, the Raspberry Pi's original purpose was to regain lost interest in the technical side of computing, providing children and students with an inexpensive platform to experiment with and learn more about coding and programming.
It's original Linux based OS lacked the polish of the standard desktop operating system, which worked perfectly for those needing to work deeper within the system with a hands-on-approach.
However, it would now seem the developers are looking to provide users with a choice of OS, showcasing within a video, the device running the Google-made Android OS on a TV.
Ebon Upton, one of the founders of the Raspberry Pi, said: "This implementation uses a different kernel and VideoCore binary image from the one available on GitHub, which is why we've been keeping quiet about it so far,"
"We're investigating the feasibility of converging the two code lines to produce a single common platform as soon as we can, at which point we hope to release the sources for you to play with" he continued.

'I am not interested in giving them 'fun', I want to give them meaning'
David Cage wants to challenge players’ minds and not their thumbs with Beyond: Two Souls, the Quantic Dream CEO has said.
Speaking to Edge, the Heavy Rain developer said he was more interested in giving players meaning with his latest title rather than just fun.
He added that his goal with Beyond was to create something different rather than sticking to traditional game development cues.
"My goal is to surprise people, to give them something they want without knowing they want it," said Cage.
"I want to create an emotional journey, a unique experience. I am not interested in giving them 'fun', I want to give them meaning. I don't want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds."

Insomniac boss is very optimistic for the holiday season
[h=3]Insomniac Games[/h]www.insomniacgames.com
NPD reports each month in the US paint a pretty horrific picture of the health of the games industry, but as EA Labels head Frank Gibeau would tell you, NPD retail data is only a piece of the overall puzzle. Indeed, including digital revenues and the social and mobile sectors, the global games business continues to expand. Insomniac Games boss Ted Price couldn't be happier with what he's been seeing.
Speaking to GamesIndustry International recently, the CEO commented, "Based on the quality of the games I've seen, the doom-and-gloom we've heard from various folks over the last few months about the console industry seems to ring hollow. It makes me very optimistic about the fall and the holiday in terms of great titles."
Insomniac, which just launched its first Facebook game Outernauts, is the latest example of a traditional games developer branching out. As Price puts it, "I think everyone is experimenting."
"I think what we're seeing is more flexibility and a willingness to break down conventional thinking when it comes to distribution and monetization across the board," he told us. "Whether it is across the board on Facebook games or console games, everyone who will succeed will probably be very flexible in their approach."
"For us at Insomniac, if you had asked me 5-7 years ago about being in the social gaming space, I would have said 'what social gaming space?' Things have really moved fast and we as a small company have the great opportunity to move with it and react very quickly and do things like bring big games with console sensibilities to a new audience."

We already knew that Microsoft would be upgrading its Touch Mouse to support Windows 8 gestures, but the outfit never confirmed which finger movements, exactly, would be built in. Now, Redmond is explaining it all, even though the mouse won't actually get updated until Win8 goes on sale in late October. According to the company, you'll be able to swipe two fingers to the right to toggle between open programs, and two to the left to expose those Charms. Sliding three fingers up and down will allow you to use Semantic Zoom. (Naturally, you'll be able to swipe from side to side to move through the tiles on your Start screen, but you probably already guessed that.) We have a Touch Mouse here at Engadget HQ that we're just itching to update, but until those drivers drop three months from now, it seems we'll just have to find something else to keep us entertained.

Just when we needed a modern-day equivalent of sailing down the Nile while being fanned by Assyrian slaves, Thermaltake gives us this: the Black Element Cyclone Edition gaming mouse, which has a 6,000 rpm rotor directed right at the point where slick skin meets plastic. Pictures of the device have been floating around the web for a while, but we've just heard it'll be available in US stores any day now (or officially, "in August") priced at $80. The patent pending design promises to keep noise down to a sub-environmental 21.7dB, while delivering an airflow of 2.6 cubic feet per minute -- which, if you're lucky, should be enough to not only keep your digits dry but also reach your palm. The fan can alternatively be removed, in which case you'll be left with a 6,500 dpi laser sensor, an adjustable weight of up to 22.5 grams, "military-grade" grip coating and an abundance of natural oils.

July 30th, 2012, 21:27 Posted By: wraggster
After what seems like an eternity of legislation limbo, PEGI age ratings for video games have become law in the UK today.
UKIE has done a great job of getting decent coverage of the achievement on the BBC this morning – all the more impressive considering the blanket reporting of the London Olympics that is currently dominating the nation’s consciousness.
The headline change is that it is now for the first time illegal to sell 12-rated video games to youngsters below that age.
But there’s more to it than that, of course. As outlined in Parliament’s Video Recordings (Labelling) Regulations 2012 legislation, games will now be classified by a single body – PEGI.
The actual rating process will be conducted by the Video Standards Council (VSC). It also means an end to BBFC ratings on the front of game cases.
Retailers who are found guilty of selling games to underage customers face a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a £5,000 fine. Those who sell titles without the necessary age-rating certificates could find themselves with a two-year jail sentence and an unlimited fine.
Trading Standard officers will, in the words of officials, “be working with all retailers over the next few months to help them manage the transition”.
“The UK has one of the most dynamic and innovative video games industries in the world, and the games they produce not only entertain millions, but can also educate and foster creativity,” culture minister Ed Vaizey stated.
“Today’s simplification of the ratings system benefits both industry and consumers and will help ensure that the millions of games sold in the UK each year are being played by the audiences they were intended for.”

Sega's official Olympics tie-in London 2012: The Official Videogameis the new number one in the UK all-formats software chart.
The games-buying public appears to have been inspired by Danny Boyle's opening ceremony on Friday night, propelling Sega's game to the top of the charts - and the publisher's other tie-in, Mario & Sonic At The London 2012 Olympic Games, has also profited, rising five places to number three.
It means London 2012 ends the recent chart dominance of Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, which last week became the first game this year to top the chart for five consecutive weeks.
In a quiet week for new releases, there's just one new entry in the top 40: Nintendo's DS title Pokémon Conquest debuts at number 17.
01. London 2012: The Official Videogame (Sega)~
02. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Warner Bros)

E3 2013 to take place between June 11th and 13th
E3 will remain in Los Angeles for at least the next three years, The ESA has confirmed.
After rumours had circulated that one of the biggest events in the games industry calendar would change location, the ESA has signed a new deal to keep it at the Los Angeles Convention Centre for the foreseeable future.
“We are proud to partner with Los Angeles for another three years. The City serves as a strong backdrop for the video game industry’s biggest announcements and we look forward to remaining in LA,” said ESA CEO Michael Gallagher.
“Video games are a dominant force in the global entertainment marketplace and there is no better place to display that than Los Angeles. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the City and AEG.”
The plan development of the new Farmer’s Field is still set to go ahead, although the ESA has worked with the centre’s owners to create a schedule to accommodate its use for future events.
The show however will also take at LA LIVE and other small venues throughout the city.

THQ president Jason Rubin has said games consoles are destined to move away from the fixed $60 boxed game and get closer to the 'PC model' of mixed-budget retail and digital sales.
<figure style="margin: 0px 0px 20px 20px; padding: 0px; border: 0px currentColor; width: 300px; color: rgb(68, 68, 68); text-transform: none; line-height: 21px; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; clear: both; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: inherit; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; float: right; display: block; white-space: normal; position: relative; orphans: 2; widows: 2; font-size-adjust: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;" class="article-image article-image-alt article-image-300"></figure>"The way the industry has been set up with all titles selling for roughly the same price at retail next to each other is that there's been a race to make the biggest, baddest-ass game," he said."If you walk into a store as a gamer and see a massive $120 million dollar game next to a $30 million dollar game, and a $80 million marketing budget backed that $120 million game up, it's likely you're going to pull that one off the shelf," added Rubin in the Game Informer interview.
Later he said: "As time progresses, the entire industry will move closer to what we see in the PC model emerging now, which is a lot of different-sized games and different types of games that all get a place in the sun because you can buy things that aren't $60 boxed goods."
When asked what most excited him about the future for games, Rubin spoke of the industry broadening out. "What excites me is I think the business is going to broaden out. I think it's good for the industry and it's good for gamers, too. I don't think gamers realize how good opening up the rules so that game developers can distribute and price as they want and do whatever they want is," he said.
"At the end of the day, the gamer will determine what succeeds and fails because they're the ones with the dollars in the pocket."
Shareholders currently suing THQ for 'misleading' claims regarding its disastrously failed uDraw peripheral, after the tablet left THQ with around 1.4 million unsold units by February 2012, resulting in a revenue shortfall of around $100 million.

The Entertainment Software Association says it will make 'a big announcement' regarding next year's E3 tomorrow - with a new venue potentially on the cards.
E3 2013 is currently without a date, and the show's traditional home at the Los Angeles Convention Centre is in jeopardy. The LACC's West Hall - which is regularly packed with exhibitors such as Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft - may be demolished as part of a new $1bn stadium.
ESA's communiations chief Rich Taylor tweeted this weekend: "“On Monday I’ll be making a big announcement regarding E3 2013, so be sure to follow me for updates and spread the word.”
It follows words from the ESA president Michael Gallagher, who told the LA Times last month: "We're still in discussions with the city of Los Angeles but we have a number of issues that still need to be resolved.
“If we can't resolve them, we are preparing to go elsewhere.
"We need assurances on things like square footage, the quality of the space, the ease of loading and unloading equipment, signage throughout the convention center for marketing and sponsorships.
"We love being in Los Angeles, but we also have a show to put on."
San Francisco, New York, Chicago and New Orleans have all been named as possible candidates for E3 2013.
E3 has taken place in Los Angeles for 16 of the show's 18 years.
